Jackson, MS-The Belhaven volleyball team suffered a tough loss at NCAA Division I Jackson State University Wednesday night 3-1. The final set scores were 25-20, 21-25, 24-26, and 17-25. The Blazers only loss prior to Wednesday's match was a 3-2 setback at the Rhodes Invitational against Millsaps College.
Belhaven (8-2) got off to a good start rallying from an early 12-5 deficit in the first game to win 25-20. Jackson State (4-5) turned the tables on Belhaven in the second game as it was the Tigers who would rally to even the match at one game apiece. The Blazers led 21-19 in the second game, but Jackson State scored the last six points to take the set 25-21. The turning point in the match was game three when the Tigers fought back to claim a 26-24 win. Belhaven had what seemed to be a comfortable lead at 20-10, but Jackson State posted 16 of the final 20 points in the game to move ahead in the match 2-1. In what proved to be the deciding set, Jackson State pulled away from Belhaven in game four 25-17 en route to a 3-1 win.
Belhaven was led by
Christina Atwood who had 10 kills to pace the offense.
Natalie Davis had eight kills followed by
Samantha O'Malley and
Taylor Williams with six kills apiece.
Katherine Owen claimed 26 digs and Williams added 21 digs in the match.
Erin Bradley finished the night with 27 assists.
Christine Edwards had a match high 14 kills for Jackson State while Donisha Dunn ended the night with 10 kills. LaToya Clark assisted on 38 kills and had a pair of aces in the contest. Edwards also had a team high 23 digs in the match. Helping out on defense was Paige Williams who had five solo blocks and six block assists.
Belhaven will be back in action on Friday when they face Brenau University (GA) at the Southern States Athletic Conference crossover tournament in Montgomery, AL. Friday's match will also signal the beginning of conference play for the Blazers. Belhaven remains in Montgomery on Saturday to face off with Emmanuel College (GA) and Southern Wesleyan University. Friday's contest is slated for 7:00 PM.
