Blazers Go 1-1 on Day Two of Rhodes College Tourney

Memphis, TN- The Belhaven volleyball finished play at the Rhodes College Tournament on Saturday afternoon claiming a win and a loss. The Blazers dropped the first contest to Millsaps College 3-2. Belhaven then notched a win over the host school Rhodes College 3-1 to close out the two day tournament. Final set scores against Millsaps College were 25-22, 22-25, 20-25, 25-21, and 12-15. Final numbers versus Rhodes were 6-25, 25-22, 27-25, and 25-13. The Blazers recorded a 3-1 record in the tourney claiming two victories the previous day against Hendrix and Sewanee.

Match One
Belhaven (7-1) had a promising start in the match defeating Majors in the first set 25-22. The Majors then turned it on in the second set rallying back to take set two 25-22 tying the set match at 1-1. After winning set two, Millsaps took that momentum into the next set picking up a 25-20 decision. Belhaven got things back on track in the third set taking it 25-21 evening the sets at 2-2. The match went to set five and Millsaps found a way to gather themselves taking the fifth and final set 15-12 while claiming the match victory 3-2.

Leigh Anne Huddleston led the Blazers in kills with 18 including one dig on the night. Samantha O'Malley followed Huddleston in kills with 12 while gaining five assists. Christina Atwood turned in eight kills and four solo blocks in the contest while Erin Bradley led the Blazers in assists with 26. Taylor Williams as well as Alyson Plyer picked up 14 digs apiece. As a team, the Blazers tallied 13 team blocks and 45 assists.

Match Two
In match number two of the day, Rhodes College jumped on the Blazers early taking a 1-0 edge thanks to a 25-6 victory in the first set. The Blazers then regrouped in the second set winning set 25-22 evening the sets up at 1-1. Rhodes College fought strong in set three yet the Blazers were able to hold them off prevailing inset three 27-25. After set three, the Blazers never looked back defeating Rhodes in set four by 12 points 25-13 as the Blazers claimed the match victory.

Belhaven was led by Taylor Williams with 20 kills and she also had a team high 14 digs in the contest. Christina Atwood rounded in 10 kills and had 4 blocks assists. Erin Bradley had 42 assists in the contest while Katherine Owen and Gabriella Zorzoli turned in seven digs apiece. As a team, the Blazers racked up 11 blocks, 46 assists and 40 digs.

Belhaven is back in action on September 13 at NCAA Division II University of Arkansas- Monticello. Match time is set for 6:00 PM.
