Blazers Drop Both Games of a Doubleheader at William Carey

Jackson, MS- The Belhaven softball team dropped two Southern States Athletic Conference West Division games at second ranked William Carey University Tuesday afternoon. The Crusaders topped the Blazers in the first contest 2-1 and followed that up with a 7-0 win in the second game. It was a tough day for the Blazers who scored only one run while combining for ten hits in the two games.

Game One
William Carey University (36-1, 8-0 SSAC) turned in their first runs in the bottom of the second inning to pull in front. Casey Alexander hit a single up the middle to rally in Jasmine Shelly and Shayna Turner giving the Crusaders a 2-0 advantage. The Blazers tallied their only run in the top of the sixth on a wild pitch by Anna Ard brining allowing Jessica Paris to score. The Blazers left three potential runs in the inning and couldn't muster up any runs in the top of the seventh as the game ended with a final of 2-1.

Christina Jaques and Lizzy Hess led the Blazers in hits with one a piece. Sarah Burns pitched all seven innings giving up two runs and seven hits. Burns took the loss dropping her season record to 20-3. Tan Montgomery and Casey Alexander led the Crusaders in hits with two apiece. Anna Ard pitched a complete game for Carey giving up one run and two hits. Ard earned the win increasing her season record 18-0.

Game Two
The Blazers struggled in a game two and failed to score in the nightcap. The Crusaders scored three runs in the first, added two more runs in the second and two more runs in the third to take command of the game. Tan Montgomery scored off a Casey Alexander single and Judy Barber along with Shana Gunter scored from a Sarah Beckman triple. Missy Paulina scored a run in the bottom of the second coming in on a Turner bunt. Barber then hit a double rounding in Alexander for the run giving the Crusaders a 5-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the third, Jasmine Shelby hit a two run homerun over the right field fence bringing in Beckman. The Blazers had eight hits, but couldn't convert any hits to runs leaving 12 runners stranded on base. Rebecca Rousseau got the start in the circle for the Blazers giving up three hits and three runs. Rousseau took the loss dropping her season record 11-3. Christina Jaques, Rian O'Bannon and Rebecca Rousseau led the Blazers in hits with two apiece. Sarah Beckman led the Crusaders in hits with two of their eight hits in the contest. Alyssa Boutwell started in the circle for the Crusaders allowing five hits in four innings of work. The win improved her season record to 14-1.

Belhaven is now 32-6 on the season and 6-4 in Southern States Athletic Conference play. The Blazers will look to get back on track on Friday as they travel to Montgomery, AL to take on Faulkner University in a conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM.
