Ridgeland, MS- The Belhaven softball team increased their Southern States Athletic Conference record to 6-2 with two wins over Auburn University at Montgomery at Freedom Ridge Park on Saturday afternoon. The Blazers beat the Senators in game one 8-0 and in game two prevailed 5-2. The Blazers, ranked 9th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, dropped another top ranked team in AUM who was ranked 22nd coming into the day.
Game One
Belhaven (32-4, 6-2 SSAC) put up four of their eight runs in the 3rd inning and closed out the contest in the 5th and 6th innings with two runs apiece.
Christina Jaques singled to third to bring in pinch runner
Jessica Paris for the first run and then
Lizzy Hess scored on a passed ball.
Annalee Carr tripled to round in Jaques and
Annalee Carr stole home to give the Blazers a 4-0 advantage heading into the 4th.
In the bottom of the 5th Carr scored on a CeeCee Austin groundout to second.
Rebecca Rousseau hit a homerun to left field giving the Blazers a 6-0 lead and Carr finished the contest off with a double to right center chasing in
Rian O'Bannon and Hess which tacked on two more runs ending the game at 8-0.
Belhaven turned in 11 hits and scored 8 runs in the contest with
Lizzy Hess leading the way for the Blazers with three hits.
Sarah Burns pitched all six innings giving up only three hits while not allowing any runs. Stacin Halverson led the Senators with two hits while Taylor Burt started in the circle and suffered the loss giving up eleven hits and eight runs.
Game Two
The Blazers put up all five of runs in the bottom of 2nd inning of game two. Austin scored thanks to a
Kayla Maldonado single who in turn scored off a Hess base hit. Jaques followed up with a double bringing in Hess and
Katie Sanders. O'Bannon singled through the right side plating Jaques leading to a 5-0 advantage.
AUM (25-11, 1-7 SSAC) rallied in top of the fifth scoring two runs as Brandi Richards hit a homerun and brought in Joanna Reynolds for the score making it 5-2. The Blazers held off the Senators the rest of the way turning in a final of 5-2. Jaques and Maldonado led the Blazers in hits with two apiece. Burns got the start and the win in the circle surrendering five hits without allowing any runs increasing her season record to 20-2. Brandi Richards and Jyssica Peppers led the Senators in hits with two apiece. Courtney Baker pitched all seven innings and received the loss for Auburn-Montgomery.
Belhaven will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Hattiesburg to take on SSAC rival William Carey in a double header beginning at 4:00 PM.
