Blazers Fall in SSAC Tournament to Emmanuel

Rome, GA-The Belhaven men's basketball team saw the 2010-11 season come to a close Thursday night falling in overtime 72-69 to Emmanuel College in the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals at the Forum in Rome, GA. The Blazers, who were the number three seed from the west division, lost for the second time this season to the Lions who had won the only regular season meeting back in November 69-68.

Belhaven (16-15) was led by Rob Wallace who had 19 points in his final game as a Blazer. Wallace finished the season averaging just under 20 points per game at 19.6 and led the team in assists with 105 after picking up two more on Thursday. Senior Nathaniel Roche' had 14 points and eight rebounds while adding a blocked shot against the Lions. Brittion Smith rounded out the double digit scorers for Belhaven with 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Senior Bobby Grier had six points, four assists, and six steals while senior Detrick Johnson contributed eight points and four rebounds. The Blazers other senior was Tensley Cowan who chipped in with four points and came up with five rebounds.

As a team, Belhaven hit 39.4 percent of their field goals (26-66), dialed up 13.6 percent of their three pointers (3-22), and converted 63.6 percent of their free throw attempts (14-22). The Blazers won the battle of the boards 42-33 and scored 22 second chance points and 40 points in the paint.

Emmanuel (24-7) was led by Tedrick Hudson who poured in a game high 21 points and a team high seven rebounds. Asmatiek Fields came off the bench and dropped in 15 points followed by Michael Stanley with 13 points and six assists. The Lions made 48.1 percent of their field goals (26-54), hit 15.4 percent of their three pointers (2-13), and converted 69.2 percent of their attempts at the charity stripe (18-26). Emmanuel also had 40 points in the paint and scored 22 points off of 21 Belhaven turnovers.

Belhaven had things clicking early exploding out to a 10-0 lead in the first two and a half minutes of action. Roche' put the Blazers on the board with a layup after grabbing an offensive rebound and then Cowan capped the run with a bucket off an assist from Wallace. Emmanuel climbed back into the game and went ahead for the first time at 20-19 on a Hudson put back basket with 9:06 left in the first half. The Lions kept the lead for the remainder of the first half with the exception of two ties at 27-27 and 30-30 and eventually controlled the scoreboard at the break 34-31.

Belhaven regained the lead early in the second half 35-34 on a field goal by Wallace with 18:17 to play. The game then went back and forth the rest of the way and the Blazers eventually found themselves holding a 60-58 edge with only 21 seconds on the clock after Wallace sunk a pair of three throws. Michael Stanley turned the ball over with 13 seconds, but Grier and the Blazers immediately gave it back to the Lions which setup a Hudson game tying basket with nine seconds left. Wallace missed a last second jump shot sending the game to overtime tied at 60-60. Emmanuel took the edge five seconds into overtime on a Hudson free throw and never trailed holding on for the 72-69 win.

Belhaven's 2010-11 campaign comes to a close while Emmanuel moves on to play Faulkner University in the semifinals Friday at 8:00 PM. The other men's semifinal matchup features Loyola University and Southern Polytechnic State at 4:00 PM. The winners move on to the championship game and earn automatic berths to the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, MO.
