Ridgeland, MS- The Belhaven softball team split a pair of games against Southern States Athletic Conference opponent University of Mobile on Saturday afternoon. The Blazers dropped the first contest 11-3 and won the second game by the final score of 8-4. The Blazers had a combined 13 hits and 11 runs for the two games.
Game One
Mobile (23-7, 5-1 SSAC) put up three runs in the first inning as Mayless Rodriguez scored an unearned run off a walk by
Rebecca Rousseau. Jessica Swanson then hit an RBI single that brought in Milagros Lozada and Jessica Rogers. The Rams gained a 3-0 advantage in the first then rallied for two more runs in the 2nd inning. The Rams got back to back homeruns from Rodriguez and Holli McLeod making the score 5-0. In the top of the 3rd the Rams tacked another run on the board as Swanson crossed the plate due to a throwing error by
Christina Jaques.
The Blazers got on the broad with a RBI single from
Rian O'Bannon that chased home
Katie Sanders and
Lizzy Hess making the score 6-2. The Rams then tacked on 5 more runs in the top of the 4th. Lozada homered to left bringing in McLeod and Rogers. Joiner scored off a SAC fly by Erica Bracey and Swanson scored off a RBI single from Rodriguez giving the Rams an 11-2 advantage.
Rian O'Bannon hit a single to bring in Hess for the final run of the game making the score 11-3. Jessica Swanson led the Rams with three hits and as a team Mobile combined for nine hits. Haley Baker received the win in the circle giving up four hits and two runs.
Rebecca Rousseau started in circle and was charged with her second loss of the season. O'Bannon turned in three of the six hits for the Blazers in the contest.
Game Two
Belhaven (28-4, 4-2 SSAC) got off to a quick start in game two as CeeCee Austin homered in the bottom of the first plating Jaques to give the Blazers a 2-0 advantage. In the second, Jaques singled to left bringing home
Katie Sanders and
Rebecca Rousseau extending the lead to 4-0. The Blazers them put up four runs in bottom of the third gaining an 8-0 advantage.
Rachel Wright singled to center rallying in Austin and then Wright scored off a wild pitch by Kamron Strickland.
Kayla Maldonado stole home to tack on the Blazers final run of the inning.
The Rams rallied to put up two runs in the top of the fifth as Mayless Rodriguez hit a single to round in Fontenot and Swanson cutting the Ram deficit to 8-2. Mobile recorded two more runs in the top of the sixth as Bracey and Rogers scored on a throwing error by Jaques. However, it wasn't enough as Belhaven held on for an 8-4 win.
As a team, the Blazers had seven hits with
Christina Jaques leading the way with two hits in the game.
Sarah Burns got the start in the circle as she pitched all seven innings giving up seven hits and four runs. Burns earned the victory and improved her record to 17-2 this season. Jessica Rogers led the Rams in hits with two. Kamron Strickland got the start in the circle for the Rams and was tagged with the loss.
Belhaven will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Marion, AL to take on Judson College. The first pitch of game one of the doubleheader is slated for 2:00 PM.
