Ridgeland, MS-The Belhaven softball team extended their winning streak to 18 games with a pair of Southern States Athletic Conference West Division wins over Spring Hill College on Wednesday afternoon. The Blazers, ranked ninth in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, took game one 4-0 and game two 6-0. Belhaven has not lost since February 25th when they fell to Faulkner University in the second game of a doubleheader.
Game One
Belhaven (27-3, 3-1 SSAC) scored all four of their runs in the third inning as
Rian O'Bannon came up with a clutch one out two run double to center field scoring
Katie Sanders and
Lizzy Hess. Sanders and Hess each had singles to open the inning.
CeCee Austin followed
Annalee Carr at the plate and ripped a single up the middle allowing O'Bannon to scamper home from second to make it a 3-0 game. Carr, who doubled in front of Austin, stole home for what would be the fourth and only run of the game for either side.
Sarah Burns pitched all seven innings and gave up just two hits while striking out one. O'Bannon led the Blazers on offense going 2 for 2 with a double, a run scored and two runs batted in. Austin had one hit and an RBI followed by
Rachel Wright,
Chelsea Randle, Sanders, and Hess who all had one hit apiece. Carr and Austin were each credited with a stolen base.
Sam Brooks was charged with the loss for the Badgers allowing all four runs on eight hits. Brooks walked two and struck out four in six innings in the circle. Brooke Turlich and Haley Brown had the only hits for Spring Hill.
Game Two
Belhaven took control of the second game in the first two innings plating four runs in the first and two more in the second. Austin brought home the first two runs of the game with a single up the middle.
Christina Jaques and O'Bannon had back to back singles to begin the inning with Jaques swiping second base prior to scoring on Austin's single. Wright cashed in the third RBI with a base hit to center and then Randle lifted a sacrifice fly to left sending in Austin for a 4-0 lead. In the second, an Austin two run double to center field chased in Carr and O'Bannon extending the lead to 6-0. The Belhaven pitching staff made the lead stand up over the final five innings to secure the win.
Austin had four of the six runs batted in as she went 2 for 3 at the plate in game two.
Kayla Maldonado and Hess each had a pair of hits followed by Sanders, Carr, O'Bannon, and Jaques who each had one hit. Wright and Randle had an RBI apiece and the Blazers had two steals in the game as Jaques and O'Bannon both swiped a base.
Burns started the second game and notched another win firing five innings with three strikeouts. Burns improved her 2011 record to 16-2 and has compiled 119 strikeouts.
Ashley Mottola worked the final two innings in the circle and gave up just one hit. Mottola recorded one walk and one strikeout.
Turlich, Brittany Fields and Stephanie Fair had the only hits in the game for Spring Hill College (7-20, 0-2 SSAC). Fields took the loss in the circle as she was tagged with six runs on seven hits in two innings of work. Brooks pitched four innings and surrendered four hits without giving up a run.
Belhaven will be back in action on Saturday as they host the University of Mobile in another SSAC West Division matchup beginning at 2:00 PM.
