Blazers Roll Past Arkansas-Monticello

Monticello, AR-The Belhaven baseball team rolled to an 11-2 victory over NCAA Division II University of Arkansas-Monticello Tuesday afternoon. The Blazers, ranked 12th in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, exploded for 15 hits including three doubles and three home runs that propelled them to the win.

Belhaven (23-7) grabbed the early lead in the top of the first when Tyler Wrinkle began the game with a double down the left field line. Lake Eiland then brought him in on a single up the middle to make it a 1-0 game. In the third, the Blazers added to their edge when Anthony Doss led off and drove his first home run of the season over the left field fence pushing the led to 2-0.

Belhaven took command of the game in the fourth when they scored seven times to build a 9-0 lead. Wrinkle brought in the first two runs on a double down the left field line scoring Jordan Brewer and Ryan Saunders. Eiland followed with a two run home run to left and then Tom Wertz capped the inning with his first home run of the season that chased home three runs to make it a 9-0 game.

Arkansas-Monticello (9-12) avoided the shutout in the sixth as they scraped together two runs on three hits. Fernando Garcia had an RBI base hit to right field and then Tanner Laran sent in run number two on a base hit to left center. Belhaven tallied the final runs of the afternoon in the eighth as Paul Moreno singled to center and Wertz added his fourth RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly to left center extending the lead to 11-2. Blazer starter Brandon McHenry pitched through the eighth and then Golden Grasse closed the game in the ninth to lock up the win.

Eiland, Doss, and Wertz all hit their first long balls of the season while Wrinkle ripped all three of Belhaven's doubles leading the offense at the plate as he went 4 for 6 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Eiland was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI's and Wertz was 1 for 4 with four runs batted in. Derek Tortorich and Doss were both 2 for 4 followed by Saunders who was 1 for 3 and Brewer who went 1 for 4.

McHenry tossed eight innings and picked up the win improving his record to 3-1. McHenry allowed just four hits and two runs with just one walk and eight strikeouts. Grasse pitched one inning and did not give up a run and surrendered only one hit.

Chase Stokes led Arkansas-Monticello at the dish going 2 for 4. Tanner Laran and Fernando Garcia each had a hit and one run batted in. Brent Noble took the loss pitching 3.1 innings allowing six runs on nine hits. Coda Medlin gave up three runs in 0.2 innings and Chris Kirkscey was charged with two runs on two hits in 3.1 innings of work. Brad Weisgerber was the fourth Bo Weevil pitcher to see action as he logged 1.2 innings on the hill without allowing a run on two hits.
