Blazers Grab Two More Wins against Truett-McConnell

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team completed a three game Southern States Athletic Conference cross divisional series sweep of Truett-McConnell wining both games of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers, ranked 12th in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, took game one of the day 10-4 and followed it up with an 11-7 victory in the nightcap.

Game One
Belhaven (19-5) scored in every inning with the exception of the fourth en route to the win in game one. Tyler Wrinkle singled to begin the first inning and advanced to third base on a throwing error by pitcher Kyle York. Lake Eiland then drove in Wrinkle on an RBI ground out to short to make it a 1-0 game. The Blazers tacked on another run in the second after two men were out. Derek Tortorich had the first of two doubles in the game down the left field line and then Ryan Saunders cashed in courtesy runner Justin Hill from second base to make it a 2-0 game.

Truett-McConnell (14-9) picked up a run in the third on an RBI base hit by Brad Mills cutting the Blazer lead to 2-1. Belhaven then answered with a four run third to take control of the game. Drew Dillard had a run scoring infield single and then Tortorich cleared the bases with a two out double to left field plating three runners that extended the edge to 6-1.

Truett-McConnell closed the gap with a run in the fourth on base hit by Ross Roberts and then in the fifth plated two runs on a Brian York single and then an error by Eiland opened the door for the other run. The Blazers once again had an answer though racking up three more runs of their own in the fifth. Paul Moreno had a pinch hit RBI single to left field, Dillon Berry brought in another run on a fielder's choice, and Moreno crossed the plate when Berry got in a run down between first and second on a stolen base attempt. Leading 9-4, Belhaven capped the scoring in the sixth as Jimmy Gilford launched his second home run of the season over the right field wall to make it 10-4.

Tortorich , who hit the game winning walk off home run in the ninth on Friday, led the way at the plate for the Blazers in game one going 2 for 3 with two doubles and three runs batted in. Wrinkle, Gilford, Eiland, Dillard, Moreno, Saunders, and Berry each had a hit and one RBI as the Blazers had a balanced offensive attack.

Brett Blaise earned the win for Belhaven in game one going four innings allowing four runs on eight hits with three walks and three strikeouts. The victory by Blaise runs his 2011 record to 4-1. Kiel Higginbotham tossed two innings in relief to keep the Bears off the board as he surrendered only hit and one walk while striking out two. Graham Upshaw pitched one scoreless inning to close out the game.

Mills and York each had two hits and an RBI for Truett-McConnell in game one while Buck Harris went 3 for 4 at the plate. Kyle York suffered the loss on the hill as he tossed four innings allowing nine runs on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts. The loss dropped his record to 4-3 on the season.

Game Two
The Blazers got out in front quickly in game two scoring four times in the bottom of the first. Eiland singled home the first two runs of the inning followed by an RBI triple by Anthony Doss and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dillard. The Bears came back to get three runs in the top of the second on a two run single by Will Harrison and then Matt Powell reached on a fielder's choice bringing in the third run of the inning off Blazer starting pitcher Alan McHenry.

Belhaven responded with two more runs in the bottom of the second as Matt Discon tripled with one out and Wrinkle chased him home on a sacrifice fly to right field. Eiland drove in the second run of inning as Gilford crossed the plate on a single to right center. Gilford had doubled down the left field line to get into scoring position.

Truett-McConnell put single runs on the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth innings to pull within a run of Belhaven at 6-5. The Blazers put the game away in the bottom of the seventh with five runs to take a commanding 11-5 lead. Doss had an RBI double and Alex Riser picked up a run scoring single to account for the first two runs. Dillon Berry then stole home followed by a pinch hit RBI double off the bat of Moreno. Discon then got credit for his fifth hit of the game and first RBI on a base hit to center field. The Bears rallied for two runs in the ninth, but it was too little to late as Belhaven held on for the 11-7 win.

Eiland had a 2 for 4 afternoon in game two with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Doss was 2 for 5 with two RBI's and Discon went 5 for 5 with one run batted in. Riser and Dillard each had a hit and one RBI apiece. Moreno had a hit in his only at bat and notched and RBI. Belhaven had 15 hits in the game and both teams combined to commit nine errors.

McHenry got the win as he went the first 5.2 innings allowing five runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts running his record to a perfect 6-0. Jon Patino worked 1.1 scoreless innings followed by Sean Kelly who tossed a shutout frame. Kyle Hunt logged a third of an inning making his first appearance since the 2009 season battling his way back to the mound after suffering an injury. Jordan Scott got the final two outs of the game to close the door on the Bears.

Harrison had a hit and two runs batted in to pace Truett-McConnell at the plate in game two. Mills was 2 for 5 with an RBI while Jonathan Wilson and Chad Fulton picked up a hit and an RBI apiece. Joey Wood (1-3) started and pitched five innings allowing six runs on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts to take the loss. Ethan Seagraves gave up three runs in 1.1 innings of work and Jacob Brewster tossed 1.2 innings with two runs allowed.
