Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team struggled at the plate and in the field Tuesday night falling to Bethel University (TN) 5-2 at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers were held to two runs for the second straight game and committed four errors in their third loss of the season.
Belhaven (7-3) fell behind early and could never generate enough momentum to get back in the game. Bethel got on the board in the top of the second with two outs as Golden Grasses hit Tyler Roberson and Cody Crocker to keep the inning going. Hunter DeBerry then singled to left field to make it a 1-0 game. The Wildcats added two more runs in the third on RBI singles by Craig Massey and Jake Ramsey followed by two more runs in the fifth frame. With one out, Kurtis Bramlett reached on a dropped fly ball by
Drew Dillard in right field and later scored on a Massey double. Massey came all the way in to home plate on a throwing error by
Jordan Brewer as he tried to cut off Bramlett's run at home plate.
Belhaven picked up their only two runs of the game in the seventh on a two run double by
Derek Tortorich to right center.
Tyler Wrinkle kept the inning alive with a two out walk,
Paul Moreno singled and the Tortorich doubled in Wrinkle and Moreno. The Blazers brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth inning, but couldn't string enough hits together to pull even.
Tortorich led Belhaven at the plate going 2 for 4 while picking up both of the Blazers RBI's. Moreno,
Ryan Saunders, and
Jimmy Gilford had the only other hits in the game as Belhaven was held to just five on the night. Grasse took the loss dropping his record to 0-1 as he went 2.2 innings allowing three runs on three hits with one strikeout.
Kiel Higginbotham pitched 1.2 innings surrendering two runs on four hits with one of the two runs being earned.
Jon Patino tossed three innings of scoreless baseball and
Sean Kelly also did not allow a run in 1.2 innings pitched Tuesday night.
Massey had a big game at the plate for Bethel (5-0) pounding out three hits while driving in two runs. Ramsey and DeBerry each had a pair of hits and one run batted in. Belhaven hitters had a tough time figuring out Joey Wilder who got the start on the mound and went seven innings for the victory. Wilder gave up just two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out five. Derek Hinson pitched a scoreless eighth and Gavin Lindsey closed the door in the ninth for his first save of the season.
