Mobile Beats Belhaven on Last Second Field Goal

Mobile, AL-The Belhaven men's basketball team lost a heartbreaker Thursday night at the University of Mobile 76-74 in Southern States Athletic Conference action. The Rams Donte Walker knocked down a jumper with four seconds left to push the Rams over the top after Belhaven's Rob Wallace drilled a triple with 19 seconds to go to tie the score at 74-74. The Blazers made a valiant effort in the second half to get back in the game after trailing at halftime 41-29.

Belhaven (14-12, 4-4 SSAC) was led by Wallace who had a game high 31 points to go along with four rebounds and two assists. It was the second time this season that Wallace has scored over 30 points in a game. He is averaging 20.2 points per contest and was second in the NAIA in total scoring going into the game.

Nathaniel Roche' ended the game with 13 points, eight boards and two blocked shots followed by Brittion Smith who tallied 11 points and five rebounds. Roche' just missed another double double and is averaging 16.2 points and 9.7 rebounds per contest in 2010-11. Roche' was third in the nation in total rebounds going into the Mobile game. Bobby Grier also played well for the Blazers with nine points, five rebounds, and three assists from his point guard position.

Belhaven connected on 47.3 percent of their field goals (26/55) and bagged 62.5 percent of their shots in the second half to fuel the comeback bid. The Blazers dialed up 46.7 percent of their triples (7/25) and made 60 percent of their attempts from long distance in the second period. One stat that came back to haunt Belhaven was free throw shooting where the Blazers were only successful on 60 percent of their attempts (15/25). Belhaven won the battle of the boards 34-29 and had 14 on the offensive end of the floor. The Blazers committed 13 turnovers, but the Rams were even better with only eight miscues in the game.

Mobile (13-10, 6-2 SSAC) was paced by Walker who drilled the game winning shot and had 24 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field. He also led the team in rebounding with nine boards. Ji Kimbrough wasn't far behind with 23 points and eight rebounds while Matthew Turner rounded out the Rams double digit scorers with 11 points. The Rams made good on 50 percent of their field goals (26/52), fired in 42.9 of their triples (3/7) and converted 61.8 percent of their free throw attempts (21/34).

The game looked promising for Belhaven through the first six minutes of the half as the Blazers maintained the edge early on. Belhaven took their first lead at 6-4 on a field goal at the 16:16 mark and then expanded the advantage to 9-5 on a Terrence Stringfellow bucket with 15:53 to go in the opening period. Belhaven held an 11-7 lead with 14:32 remaining in the opening frame following a Michael Rivers basket, but it was short lived.

Mobile took control of the half by engineering an 18-4 run to grab a double digit lead of 25-15 following a Kimbrough basket with 6:41 to go until the break. The Blazers were able to get to within seven points four different times, but the Rams held them off and took a 41-29 edge into the locker room at halftime.

Mobile made Belhaven's deficit 14 points at the outset of the second half as Brock Dockery drilled a field goal 20 seconds into the final period putting the Rams up 43-29.The Blazers then came back with a 9-2 run to close the gap to seven points at 45-38 with just over 16 minutes to play. Mobile then bumped their lead back to 12 points at 50-38 on a Kimbrough triple and then a 9-3 run by the Blazers, which was capped by a Smith basket, kept Belhaven in striking distance.

Trailing 66-56 with just under five minutes remaining on the second half clock, Belhaven chipped away at the Mobile lead and eventually tied the game at 74-74 with 19 seconds left on the triple by Wallace. That basket capped an 18-8 Belhaven run and knotted the game for the first time since the 13:17 mark of the first half. Unfortunately, Walker would get the final field goal of the night sending the Rams to the victory with four seconds left. Belhaven had one final possession, but Wallace traveled with the basketball right before he could get a final shot airborne.

Belhaven will be back in action on Saturday when they play host to William Carey University in Rugg Arena in another SSAC West Division contest at 4:00 PM. The Blazers now find themselves in fourth place in the West Division as they trail William Carey by a game for second place in the division.
