Blazers Outgunned by Southern Miss in Exhibition Contest

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-The Belhaven men's basketball team couldn't stay with NCAA Division I Southern Mississippi Tuesday night, losing an exhibition game on the road 93-48. The Blazers struggled from the field and the Golden Eagles knocked down over 50 percent of their shots en route to the win.

Belhaven (4-9) enjoyed a brief lead early in the contest at 6-5 following a jumper by senior Woodie Howard with 16:30 left in the first half. Southern Miss (11-2) scored the first five points of the game before seeing the Blazers respond with a 6-0 scoring run to grab the advantage. However, the Golden Eagles would cement the game in the first half thanks to a 31-2 burst that gave them a 36-8 advantage with just under seven minutes to play in the opening frame. Southern Miss built a 49-19 lead at halftime and controlled the action the rest of the night.

Belhaven had two players in double figures led by senior Daryl Arnold with 14 points and three assists. Howard added 11 points and a team best five rebounds from his guard position. Junior Andrew Marshall and sophomore Chris Cofield chipped in with six points apiece. The Blazers went 18 of 61 from the field (29.5%) and 1 for 18 from behind the arc. Belhaven had one of its best night's at the charity stripe bagging 11 of 15 attempts (73.3%).

Southern Miss had a huge night from Darnell Dodson who fired in a game high 24 points off the bench. Jonathan Mills added 17 points followed by Torye Pelham with 13 points. The Golden Eagles had five players land in double figures thanks to 12 point efforts by Maurice Bolden and Angelo Johnson. Bolden also had four assists while sharing the team lead in rebounds with Dodson and Mills, each posting seven on the night. As a team, Southern Miss knocked down 34 of 61 field goal attempts (55.7%) and dialed in seven triples on 15 attempts. The Golden Eagles commanded the boards with a 51-28 advantage in rebounding.

Belhaven will return to action on Thursday when they take on Rust College in the Belhaven Holiday Classic beginning at 7:00 PM. The winner will play with winner of the Mississippi College vs. Millsaps game in the championship on Friday night at 7:00 PM.
