JACKSON, Miss- The Belhaven men's basketball team defeated Talladega College on Friday night in the opening game of the Tougaloo College Classic. The Blazers overpowered the Tornadoes with a final score of 68-63, gaining their third win of the season improving their mark to 3-7.

The first half of the contest was evenly matched with both teams shooting just over 30 percent from the field. The Blazers fired in 39 percent of their shots from the floor while Talladega shot at a 36 percent clip. Both teams managed to put up 30 points going into the halftime break.

The Blazers came out strong in the second half posting 38 points thanks to a shooting percentage of 62, helping them outscore the Tornadoes by five points. The Blazers second half surge was enough to put them over the edge and gain the victory 68-63.

Belhaven was paced by senior Woodie Howard who had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Daryl Arnold turned in 15 points and added five boards. Junior Jordan Butts rounded out the double digit scorers with 11 points. Senior forward Britton Smith tossed in nine points and contributed three assists. The Blazers shot 33 percent from three point land and bagged 33.3 percent of their triple tries.

Kerry Harvis led Talladega (1-8) on the offensive end with 19 points. Following Harvis was Christopher Tanz with 17 points and Christopher Hyche managed a double-double for the Tornadoes with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Talladega shot 42% from the field and a shooting percentage of 46 from the free throw line as well from three point range.

Belhaven be back in action on Saturday night battling the host school Tougaloo College. Saturday's game will be the second meeting between the two teams this season. The Bulldogs prevailed 65-50 on November 12th. Saturday's tip-off is slated for 8:00 PM.
