JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven men's basketball team was defeated on Friday night 85-54 in a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup against Southern Wesleyan. Southern Wesleyan took control of the game in the second half and pulled away for the win.
Belhaven (3-9, SSAC 0-3) went toe to toe with the Warriors in the first half utilizing a tough defense and a first half shooting percentage of 47 percent trailing by just two points at the break 37-35. The Blazers were a little shaky at the start, but got on track at the 13:16 mark with a Chris Coefield jumper cutting the Warriors lead to one 14-13.
Datodrick Pinkston evened the score up on back to back baskets with less than five minutes left in the half. At the 2:51 mark, Belhaven realized its first lead of the contest thanks to a Britton Smith dunk making the score 33-31. With 1:10 left in the half Kenny Joyner hit a layup to put the Warriors back up two at 37-35. Joyner's bucket would prove to be the last of the half for either team.
Southern Wesleyan (6-4, SSAC, 1-2) exploded in the second half outscoring the Blazers 48-19 on some outstanding shooting, especially from behind the arc where they went 6 for 7. The Blazers could never really get on track on the offensive end of the floor only making just six field goals and six free throws during the final 20 minutes of action.
At the 10:00 mark of the second half, Southern Wesleyan built a 12 point lead. A triple by
Woodie Howard cut the deficit to nine points at 57-48 with 9:41 to play. However, with less than five minutes left in the half the Warriors went on a 13-2 which essentially put the game away at 76-53. Southern Wesleyan then went on to post the 85-54 win.

Daryl Arnold led the Blazers in scoring with 12 points and also had a team high four assists and six rebounds. Junior
Andrew Marshall dropped in 11 points while senior
Woodie Howard chipped in eight points with five rebounds. The Blazers shot 38% from the floor and 37% from the charity stripe. Belhaven did manage to force the Warriors into 28 turnovers which translated into 25 points.
Kenny Joyner turned in a double-double for the Warriors with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Stefan Julian also sent home 18 points while Sebias Duck rounded out the double digit scoring for the Warriors with 15 points and six rebounds. The Warriors shot 59% from the floor while going 6-9 from three point range (67%). The Warriors owned the lane out-rebounding the Blazers 46-27 and scoring 52 of their 85 points in the paint.
