Blazers Stumble at Union University

Jackson, TN- The Belhaven men's basketball fell at 22nd ranked Union University on Saturday afternoon 87-66. The Blazers suffered their first loss of the season dropping their record to 1-1.

Union University (2-0) came out firing on all cylinders earning an early 11 point lead within the first five minutes of play. Dani Marti made a field goal with 11:58 in the first half to give the Bulldogs a 14 point lead at 21-7. Chris Cofield connected on a pair of free throws to cut the Bulldogs lead to seven at 22-15. Leventrice Gray then pushed the Bulldogs edge up to 12 with 4:46 left to go 31-19. Andrew Marshall managed to cut into the lead with a field goal making the score 32-24. However, the Bulldogs closed the half on a 9-1 run to give them a 16 point advantage at halftime 41-25.

In the second half, Union maintained a double digit lead the rest of the contest. The Blazers weren't able to get back within 15 points of the Bulldogs the rest of the contest. The Bulldogs built their largest lead of the day with 3:11 to play following a three pointer by Pedro Faller making the score 83-58.

Belhaven (1-1) was led by Woodie Howard with 12 points while Daryl Arnold and Datodrick Pinkston both added 11 points to the mix. Chris Cofield chipped in eight points on the afternoon. Pinkston was Belhaven's leading rebounder pulling down a total of six with four of them being on the offensive end of the floor. The Blazers shot 36 percent (15/37) from the floor and 62 percent (10/15) from the charity stripe.

Five Union players turned in double figures in the contest. The Bulldogs were led by David Lane with 16 points while Samuel Danache turned in 13 points.  Followed by three players with 12 points apiece Laventrice Gray, Antoine Hall and Skyler Vaden.  Anthony Freeman Jr. had a game high eight rebounds for Union.

Up next for the Blazers is the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on November 11-12, 2011 when they face Louisiana State University at Shreveport on Friday night in Rugg Arena at 8:00 PM.
