Blazers Lose Heartbreaker to Union University on Tuesday Night

Jackson, MS- The Belhaven men's basketball team dropped Tuesday's contest against Union University (TN) 59-58 in a non-conference showdown in Rugg Arena. The loss was a heartbreaker for the Blazers after they had built a three point lead at 58-55 with 26 seconds to play in the game. It was the second meeting of the season between the two teams as Union comes away with wins in both.

The game started out shaky for both teams on the offensive end of the floor with no one establishing solid control of the game. Belhaven (2-7) managed to stay on top at the half taking a two point lead 29-27 into the locker room in a low scoring opening 20 minutes. The Blazers only shot 34% from the floor in the first half, but a free-throw percentage of 83% (5-6) gave Belhaven the edge at the halftime break.

In the second half, the contest continued as a back and forth battle with each team continuing to trade baskets. In this half of the game neither team saw more than a four point advantage with four ties and eight lead changes. The game would ultimately witness 17 lead changes and nine different ties.

With less than 26 seconds left on the clock in the second half, Daryl Arnold gained a key steal and slam dunk on the fast break giving the Blazers a three point lead, 58-55. Union's Skyler Vaden scored a basket to cut the Blazers edge to just one at 58-57 with just 14 seconds left on the clock. Vaden was then able to get his second straight basket with just 7 seconds left in the contest putting the Bulldogs in front by a one point advantage of 59-58. Vaden's basket would prove to be the game winner for the Bulldogs in the one point victory.

Senior Woodie Howard led the Blazers on the offensive end of the floor with 12 points. Junior Jordan Butts and senior Britton Smith both turned in 10 points apiece while senior Daryl Arnold chipped in nine points. Junior Terrance Stringfellow closely followed Arnold with eight points and a team high seven rebounds. As a team, the Blazers shot 37% from the floor (23-61) and 6-10 from the charity stripe. The Blazers dished out 12 assists with Arnold and Smith leading the way with four apiece.

Union (5-5) was led by Leventrice Gray with a game high 19 points. Dani Marti turned in 13 points with nine rebounds and Antoine Hall rounded out the double digit scorers for the Bulldogs with 11 points. The Bulldogs shot 45% from the floor and 60% from the free throw line.

Belhaven will look to get back on track Friday as they travel to Tougaloo College to take on Talladega College. Game-time is slated for 4:00 PM.
