Tougaloo Trips up Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven men's basketball team lost to cross town rival Tougaloo College 65-50 on Saturday night on the final day of the Coaches' vs. Cancer Classic. The Blazers suffered a loss the previous night in the classic against Louisiana State University at Shreveport and Saturday's setback drops their season record to 1-3.

Belhaven (1-3) started the contest on a 6-4 run with just over 15 minutes left in the first half and then  Tougaloo (2-2)  exploded on a 10 point run making the score 16-6 with 12:20 remaining in the first half. The Bulldogs kept up the pressure on the Blazers gaining a 17 point advantage with 9:29 to go until the break. Luke Rogers hit a three pointer to cut the Bulldogs lead to seven at the 4:31 mark before Tougaloo's James Carter scored four straight points to push the Bulldogs lead up to 18 at 40-22 going into the halftime break.

Tougaloo opened up the second half with an 8-3 run making their lead 46-27. Two straight Blazer threes by Woodie Howard and Jordan Butts cut the lead to 15 with 11:13 left to go. The Blazers continued their push when Daryl Arnold slammed a dunk down making the score 55-43. A free-throw by Jordan Butts put the Blazers within nine with 1:46 remaining. The Bulldogs then closed out the game on an 8-2 run giving them the victory 65-50.

Belhaven was led by Woodie Howard who turned in a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Daryl Arnold trailed Howard with 13 points and eight rebounds. Jordan Butts kicked in 10 points and a team high three assists. The Blazers turned in a shooting percentage from the floor of 28% (18-65) and hit at a 55 percent clip from the free throw line (10-18).

Marquise Mems led the Bulldogs with a game high 21 points and 13 rebounds. Donteeno Todd turned in 14 points while James Carter chipped in 11 points. Tougaloo shot 38% from the field and 55% from the charity stripe.

Belhaven will look to get back on track on Tuesday November 15, 2011 when they head to Pulaski, TN to face # 5 Martin Methodist College. Game-time is slated for 7:30 PM.
