Blazers Lose Opening Game of Coaches vs. Cancer Classic

Jackson, MS- Belhaven men's basketball team dropped their second contest of the season against # 6 Louisiana State University at Shreveport in the opening game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Friday night 79-60.

LSUS (1-2) took an early six point lead 11-5 off a Greg Shyne three pointer at the17 minute mark of the contest. The Blazers then cut the Pilots lead to three when Michael Halford hit a jumper making the score 25-22 with 9:50 to go in the half. Woodie Howard drained a three pointer locking the score up at 36 all with 3:32 left to go in the half. The Pilots then went on a 7-0 run to close out the first half giving themselves a seven point advantage at the break.

The Blazers came out strong in the second half with two straight baskets cutting the Pilots lead to three on an Andrew Marshall layup with 18:14 on the clock. A layup by Greg Shyne pushed the Pilots lead to nine and at the 15:36 mark Daryl Arnold scored a basket to put the Blazers back within one at 51-50. The Pilots then exploded on a 16-2 run giving them a 68-52 advantage with 4:32 left to go. The Blazers could never close the gap from that point on dropping the contest by the final score of 70-60.

Belhaven (1-2) was anchored by Britton Smith with 11 points and a team high four assists. Daryl Arnold trailed Smith in scoring with 10 points and two blocks. Jordan Butts and Woodie Howard both turned in nine points apiece for the Blazers. Three Blazers managed five rebounds apiece as Arnold, Butts and Reinis Ozolins were all active on the glass.  The Blazers shot 34% (25-72) from the floor Friday night and 66.7 (4-6) from the charity stripe.

Greg Shyne led the Pilots in scoring with a game high 28 points. Derrick Parker turned in a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds while Issiah Bazile punched in 16 points rounding out the Pilots double digit leaders. The Pilots went 29-62 from the field at 47 percent while shooting a free throw percentage of 81 off of a 13 of 16 night from the line.

The Blazers will be back in action on Saturday for day two of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic when the Blazers will take on cross town rival Tougaloo College. Game-time is slated for 8:00 PM.
