Blazers Split Two Matches at Loyola Invitational

New Orleans, LA-The Belhaven volleyball team split a pair of matches at the 2011 Hampton Inn Wolfpack Invitational hosted by Loyola University on Friday afternoon. The Blazers opened the day losing a Southern States Athletic Conference match against Loyola 3-2 with final set scores of 25-27, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21, and 8-15. Belhaven came back and notched a 3-0 win over the University of St. Thomas (TX) 3-0 with final set scores of 25-19, 25-16, and 25-18.

Belhaven (16-7, 4-5 SSAC) got off to a slow start against Loyola, who edged the Blazers in the first set and then took game two. The Blazers then regrouped to take the next two sets to even the match 2-2. The Wolfpack dominated the fifth set and in the process held off Belhaven for the victory.

Belhaven was led by Taylor Williams with 23 kills which produced a .432 hitting percentage. She also recorded 15 digs and had a solo block and block assist on defense. Christina Atwood followed Williams with 13 kills and a .381 hitting percentage. Erin Bradley had a match high 54 assists and as a team the Blazers ended the contest with 62 kills. Katherine Owen turned in a match high 20 digs.

Loyola (12-5, 7-3 SSAC) was paced by Sabrina Stansberry with 18 kills followed by O'Neal McMullan with 13 kills. Becca Burnett had 12 digs and Samantha Worsham assisted on 53 kills.

Belhaven bounced back in the second match of the day against the University of St. Thomas (TX) and earned a three set victory. Williams had another solid performance with 12 kills and a .357 hitting percentage. Leigh Anne Huddleston had double digit kills with 10 and a .471 attack percentage and Atwood wasn't far behind with nine kills and a match high .533 hitting percentage. Bradley added 35 more assists and Gabriella Zorzoli led the defense with 12 digs. Siobhan Hardy also eight digs against St. Thomas.

St. Thomas was led by Regina Trapp with 12 kills followed by Stephanie Biediger with 10 kills. Brittany Weiler had 30 assists and Brittany Downs finished the afternoon with 13 digs.

Belhaven will return to the court on Monday when they travel to Tougaloo College for a non-conference matchup with the Bulldogs. All the action is slated to get underway at 4:00 PM.
