Jackson, MS- The Belhaven women's volleyball team suffered a tough loss Saturday night against Southern States Athletic Conference opponent Loyola University with the final set scores of 32-30, 28-26, 25-21, 25-21 and 16-14. The loss drops the Blazers season record to 18-10 and 5-7 in Southern States Athletic Conference play.
The Blazers came out strong in the contest battling through for two straight set wins 32-30 and 28-26. Loyola University put together a rally to take set three 25-21 then in the fourth set the Wolfpack maintained their momentum even the match 2-2 with a 25-21 victory. The match then went into a deciding fifth set where the WolfPack was able to put a run together and take the match and final set 16-14.
Christina Atwood led the Blazers on offense with a team high 18 kills and seven digs. Her kill total matched a season high when she recorded 18 against Millsaps on September 27th. Atwood also added to her block totals with five solos and three block assists on the night. Atwood now has 98 blocks on the year.
Taylor Williams followed Atwood in kills with 16 and contributed 17 digs while
Natalie Davis chipped in 14 kills.
Gabriella Zorzoli led the Blazers turning in a season high 33 digs in the contest while
Erin Bradley had a team high 55 assists. Bradley just missed a season high in assists as she tallied 56 against Emmanuel earlier in the season. As a team, the Blazers had 65 kills and 104 digs.
Laruen Brand led the Wolfpack in kills with 25 while Kiley Tuthill closely followed with 20 of her own. Tuthill paced the Wolfpack in digs with 26 and Samantha Worsham had a match high 59 assists. As a team, the Wolfpack had 118 digs and 74 kills.
The Blazers will be back in action on Tuesday night against Millsaps College in Rugg Arena. Game time is slated for 7:00 PM. The Blazers will be participating in their “Dig Pink” event in honor of Breast Cancer awareness month. Any donations will be accepted in honor of this event.
