Blazers Tripped up by Mobile

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven volleyball team lost a tough Southern States Athletic Conference match 3-2 to the University of Mobile Tuesday night in Rugg Arena. The final set scores were 25-18, 18-25, 25-18, 18-25, and 18-20.

Belhaven (18-8, 5-6 SSAC) built an early 8-2 lead in the first set and then held off Mobile to jump up 1-0. Serita Ingram landed the final point of the set off an assist from Erin Bradley. Mobile (19-11, 6-5 SSAC) turned the tables on Belhaven in the second set and built an 8-2 lead. The Blazers pulled to within three points at 16-13, but the Rams kept Belhaven at bay to tie the match at 1-1.

In sets three and four, history repeated itself with Belhaven winning 25-18 followed by a Mobile set victory of 25-18 in the fourth game sending the match to a fifth and final set. Both teams battled neck and neck and pushed the set out to 20 points. Belhaven had an 18-17 lead only to see the Rams score the final three points to take the game and the match. The final point was recorded on a kill by Kiara Gay off an assist from Melody Tenney.

Belhaven was led by Taylor Williams with 17 kills followed by Natalie Davis with 13 kills and a team high .357 attack percentage. Bradley assisted on 49 kills and had three aces on the night. Erin Hampton recorded 13 digs and Bradley also turned away 12 Ram attack attempts. Christina Atwood had three solo blocks and a block assist on the defensive side of the net.

Mobile was led by Gay with a match high 23 kills followed by Melody Tenney with 11 kills. Disah Kolassiba had 32 assists and Gay also led the team in digs with 18.

Belhaven will return to the court on Friday for a non-conference contest against NCAA Division I Jackson State University and then meet up with Loyola University (NO) on Saturday for a key SSAC contest on Saturday. Friday's match gets underway at 7:00 PM and Saturday all the action begins at 6:00 PM.
