Blazers Split Two Matches on Day Two of SSAC Crossover Tourney

Cleveland, TN-The Belhaven volleyball team went 1-1 on day two of the Southern States Athletic Conference crossover tournament hosted by Lee University on Saturday. The Blazers opened the day falling to Lee 3-0 with final set scores of 15-25, 21-25, and 22-25, but rebounded with a win over Brewton-Parker 3-0 with final set scores of 25-10, 25-9, and 25-12. The Blazers are now 14-6 overall and 4-4 in SSAC contests.

Belhaven ran into one of the top teams in the country facing Lee in the first match on Saturday. Lee took control of the match in the first set and never looked back en route to a victory in straight sets. A bright spot for the Blazers was Christina Atwood who turned in a strong outing hammering home 10 kills in 13 attempts for a .769 attack percentage. Natalie Davis and Leigh Anne Huddleston followed with nine and eight kills respectively. Erin Bradley finished the contest with 31 assists and played a big role on defense with a team high 12 digs. Katherine Owen contributed 11 digs against Lee on Saturday.

Irene Ojukwu had a match high 13 kills for Lee while Kelsey Leffew notched 23 assists. Sarah Smith had 11 digs for the Flames and Gretchen Higdon fired in five aces off of serves.

Belhaven came back strong against Brewton-Parker College and finished the weekend with a dominating 3-0 straight set victory. The Blazers set the tone early and controlled the match from the opening serve. Taylor Williams pounded 10 kills for Belhaven to pace the offense followed by Huddleston and Davis with eight and seven respectively. Serita Ingram and Atwood each posted six kills. Bradley had 28 assists and once again led the team in digs with 10. Ingram and Davis also made their presence felt defensively with four block assists each. Davis also had a solo block to her credit in the match. As a team, Belhaven had 37 total kills and hit at a .313 clip.

Brewton-Parker couldn't get much going on offense as Jessica Hill led the team with four kills. Bobi Boyer had 12 assists and seven digs on defense.

Belhaven will be back in action at home on Tuesday night when they battle Talladega College in Rugg Arena starting at 6:00 PM.
