Late Blazer Rally Comes up Short in Loss at College of the Ozarks

Point Lookout, MO-The Belhaven men's basketball team traveled to Point Lookout, MO on Monday night and lost to the College of the Ozarks 83-76. Trailing 51-37 with 14:18 to play in the game, the Blazers marched back to tie the game at 74-74 with just under three minutes to go. However, the Bobcats would close the game with a 9-2 run and take home the win.

Belhaven (7-7) was led by Nathaniel Roche' who had 19 points and nine rebounds off the bench. Roche' had been struggling over the last three games, but got back on track Monday and was a rebound shy of recording his seventh double double of the season. Rob Wallace had 14 points followed by Detrick Johnson who had a season high of 12 points on the night. Daryl Arnold rounded out the double digit scores with 10 points in the contest. Bobby Grier paced the team in assists and steals with four each while pulling down four rebounds.

As a team, Belhaven hit 40.3 percent of their field goals (25-62), dialed up 25 percent of their triples (3-12), and had their best effort of the season at the free throw line making 92 percent of their attempts (23-25). Belhaven lost the rebounding battle 36-32 and committed 18 turnovers compared to 20 by College of the Ozarks. The Blazers also had 13 steals as a team on the night.

College of the Ozarks (8-4) had a big night from Mike Wiebe who scored a game high 24 points while dishing out five assists. Wiebe also pulled down six rebounds and was 10 of 17 shooting from the field. Three other players reached double figures for the Bobcats as Nathan Peterson and Jared Howerton notched 12 points each. Peterson earned 10 of his points at the free throw line where he was a perfect 10 for 10. Kyle Williamson rounded out the double digit scorers with 11 points off the bench. On the boards, Weston Wiebe led the way with nine rebounds while Howerton and Peterson had eight and seven rebounds respectively.

College of the Ozarks made 45.6 percent of their field goals (26-57), cashed in 32.2 percent of their three point shots (10-31), and converted 65.6 percent of their free throws (21-32).

Belhaven grabbed the early advantage at 2-0 on pair of free throws by Terence Stringfellow in the opening 15 seconds of action. Both teams battled to get a foot hold in the game during the first five minutes as evidenced by a tie and three lead changes. The Blazers final lead of the game was 8-6 at the 15:40 mark of the opening period following a jumper by Roche'. Seven seconds later Spencer Blair knocked down a triple for College of the Ozarks to put them up 9-6. The Bobcats led by as many as 13 points in the first half and enjoyed a 40-31 edge at the break.

College of the Ozarks used the first six minutes of the second half to bump their lead to 14 points at 51-37 with 14:18 left to play. However, over the next 13 minutes Belhaven outscored the Bobcats 37-23 to tie the game at 74-74 late. Roche' evened the score on a layup and was fouled putting him at the line with the opportunity for a three point play. Unfortunately, the free throw bounced off the rim and a few seconds later Darian Kelly put the Bobcats back on top for good with a jumper enabling College of the Ozarks to pull away for the 83-76 win.

Belhaven will be back in action Tuesday afternoon when they battle Bellevue University (Neb) starting at 1:00 PM from Point Lookout, MO.
