Cleveland, TN- The Belhaven Volleyball team opened up the Lee University Invitational with an enormous win over Union University on Friday night. The Blazers defeated Union in a hard-hitting five set match with the final scores of 25-21, 15-25, 25-21, 19-25, and 15-13. With the win Belhaven boosted their season record to 6-3.

The Blazers managed to have three players in double figures in kills on the night. Christiana Atwood led the way with 15, trailing her was Christina Jaques with 14 followed by Taylor Williams with 10. The Blazers also had four players in double figures in digs, Gabriella Zorzoli led with 20 followed by Katherine Owen with 15, Erin Bradley with 13 and Williams rounded it out with 10. Bradley had a team high 47 assists while Jaques racked up nine block assists with Erinn Hampton adding an additional four block assists. As a team the Blazers pulled in 60 kills, 88 digs and 17 total blocks.

“It was a good fight and we were up in a few of the sets by four points”, said Head Coach Lydia Smith. “We gave up our lead then had to fight to the finish for the win. I am proud of the way our team played tonight against a very good opponent. We showed a lot of toughness to hang in there and pull out the victory.”

The Blazers will be back in action at the Lee Invitational in a double header on Sturday as they take on the host school Lee University at 9:30 AM followed by a showdown with Trevecca Nazarene University at 2 p.m. Fans can follow the Live Stats of all the action at the Lee University Invitational by clicking here.
