New Orleans, LA-The Belhaven volleyball team earned a pair of season opening victories Saturday afternoon at the Xavier University (LA) tri-match. The Blazers upended the host Xavier in three sets with final scores of 25-20, 25-14, and 25-16. Belhaven followed that up with a 3-1 triumph against NCAA Division I Alabama State with set scores of 25-23, 25-21, 23-25, and 25-21.

Christina Atwood led Belhaven in kills against Xavier with 11 and had two blocks and five block assists. Taylor Williams had 17 assists and nine digs while Gabriella Zorzoli added eight digs in the match. As a team, the Blazers notched a 36.2 attack percentage and controlled the contest from start to finish. Katherine Owen, Samantha O'Malley, and Zorzoli each turned in a pair of aces on serves.

The Alabama State match was more tightly contested, but the Blazers fought their way to their second win of the season. Williams notched 35 assists and had 22 digs. Leigh Anne Huddleston had a team high 15 kills and Christina Jaques also played very well tallying 14 kills with three solo blocks. Owen came up with nine digs and had a couple of aces in the win over Alabama State.

With the wins, the Blazers begin the season 2-0 and will meet up with the Tougaloo Bulldogs on Tuesday night at Tougaloo. All the action is slated to begin at 7:00 PM.
