Gulf Shores, AL-The Belhaven University softball team, ranked 5th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, lost both games of the GCAC Tournament Championship to 16th ranked William Carey University at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. The Blazers lost game one 11-3 and game two 2-0. Friday's losses drop the Blazers record to 50-8 while the Crusaders press forward to 38-13 in 2010.
Game One
William Carey didn't waste any time putting runs on the board as they got three runs off of two hits in the top of the first frame. The Blazers answered back in the bottom of the first when
Christina Jaques hit a RBI single to shallow right-center allowing
Britney Webb to cross the plate. The Crusaders tagged on two more runs in the top of the second inning and one run in the fifth to make the score 6-1.
The Blazers scored their last two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth frame as Webb hit a two run single to shallow right scoring
Chelsea Randle and
Lizzy Hess. In the top of the sixth, the Crusaders exploded with four runs on four hits and added in one more run in the seventh frame to defeat Belhaven 11-3.
Rebecca Rousseau picked up the loss for the Blazers pitching two innings allowing four runs and four hits with one strikeout. Anna Ard captures the win for William Carey pitching 4.2 innings allowing four hits and three runs.
Britney Webb led the Blazers offense going two for three at the plate with two runs batted in followed by
Christina Jaques who had one RBI and
Chelsea Randle with one hit. The Crusaders were led offensively by Casey Alexander and Jeana Erickson who each had three runs batted in trailed by Shana Gunter with one RBI.
Game Two
Game two was all about defense and solid pitching as the Blazers gave up only four hits while William Carey game up six hits. The only runs of the game came in the top of the sixth frame as William Carey struck for two runs on three hits when Tan Montgomery hit a RBI double to left-center field allowing Kelsey Jo Smith to score. The second of the inning came as Casey Alexander hit a RBI single through the hole at shortstop to score Montgomery giving a 2-0 victory and making the Crusaders of William Carey University the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Champions.
Sarah Burns took her first loss of the day pitching seven innings allowing two runs on four hits with nine strikeouts dropping her record to 26-4 in 2010. Alyssa Boutwell got the win for William Carey by firing a scoreless six innings giving up three hits with two strikeouts.
The Blazers struggled at the plate in game two as Jaques and
Rian O'Bannon led the offense with two hits apiece. Alexander led the Crusaders going one for three at the plate with one run batted in.
Belhaven will now await word on a potential at large bid to the NAIA National Tournament in Decatur, AL May 20th through the 26th.
