Blazers Defeat William Carey in the GCAC Tournament Semi-Final

Gulf Shores, AL- The Belhaven softball team, ranked 5th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, defeated the 16th ranked William Carey University in the semi-final game of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference tournament by a final of 2-1 at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex. The Blazers victory advances their record to 50-6 while the Crusaders drop to 36-13 in 2010.

William Carey jumped on the board first in the top of the second inning as the designated player Shana Gunter scored on a wild throw. The Blazers struck back in the bottom of the fourth frame to tie the game up when Tiffany Ansley hit a double to deep right-center and advanced to third on a wild pitch by the Crusaders pitcher Kelsey Jo Smith. Heather Pace hit a RBI single to right-center field platting Ansley.

Belhaven claimed the victory in the bottom of the fifth as Rachel Wright led off by hitting a single to right-center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Katie Sanders hit a sacrifice bunt allowing Wright to move to third. Lizzy Hess reached base on a misplayed grounder and Wright crossed the home plate for the final score of 2-1.

Sarah Burns picked up her 26th win for the Blazers as she pitched the entire game throwing 93 pitches. Burns allowed only two hits and one run with eight strikeouts to advance her overall record to 26-3 in circle for the 2010 season. Kelsey Jo Smith gets the loss for William Carey as she worked in the circle for four innings allowing two runs and four hits with three strikeouts.

Heather Pace led Belhaven's offense by going 1 for 3 at the plate with one RBI. Webb, Ansley, and Hess each contributed a hit for the Blazers. Casey Alexander and Missy Paulina both had a hit for the Crusaders.
