Blazers Topple Spring Hill in Opening Game of GCAC Tournament

Gulf Shores, AL-The Belhaven softball team, ranked 5th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, had another strong performance in their opening game of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference tournament defeating Spring Hill College by a final of 4-0. The win advances the Blazers record to 49-6 while the Badgers fall to 21-29 in 2010.

After a scoreless first inning for both teams, Belhaven posted two runs in the second as Katie Sanders hit a two run single to center field in the bottom of the second inning to open up a 2-0 lead. Spring Hill had a couple of costly errors which led to both runs in the frame. Tiffany Ansley then stepped into the batters box and knocked in Christina Jaques to add another run in the bottom of the third frame making the score 3-0 Blazers.

The Blazers scored their last run of the night in the bottom of fifth frame as Jaques crossed home plate on a misplayed grounder. The Badgers had chances to put runs on the board throughout the game, but could not come up with a big hit to send any runners home due to Belhaven's solid defense.

Sarah Burns earned the win for Belhaven pitching six innings while allowing just two hits. Burns did not surrender any runs while striking out five to advance her record to 25-3 in the 2010. Samantha Brooks gets the loss for Spring Hill and falls to 9-19 on the year as she worked in the circle all six innings allowing four runs and seven hits with two strikeouts.

Sanders led the Blazers on offense by going 1 for 2 at the plate with two runs batted in followed by Ansley who added in an RBI as well. Jaques had two hits, two runs scored and two stolen bases for Belhaven while Britney Webb, Heather Pace, and Rachel Wright each had one hit apiece for the Blazers. Brooke Turlich and Samantha Brooks each had one hit for the Badgers offense.

Belhaven will be back in action on Friday as they battle it out against the 14th ranked Crusaders of William Carey University in the semi-finals of the GCAC tournament. William Carey upended the University of Mobile in their opening game of the tournament 3-1. The first pitch is slated for 12:00 PM.
