Mobile, AL-The Belhaven softball team, ranked 7th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, completed two games of an eight game week by splitting a doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Spring Hill College. The Blazers won game one 1-0 in eight innings but fell short to the Lady Badgers in the second game 1-0. Belhaven is now 37-5 overall and 10-2 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Spring Hill now stands at 17-22 in the 2010 and are 3-7 in the GCAC.
Game One
Game one proved to be a low scoring contest and went into an extra inning due to tough defense. The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the eighth inning as
Britney Webb was placed on second base according to the international tie breaker rule.
Jessica Eggold moved to Webb to third on a sacrifice bunt.
Christina Jaques then reached first on a fielder's choice and Webb crossed home plate for what proved to be the winning run. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Belhaven shutdown the Lady Badgers to get the 1-0 victory.
Sarah Burns pitched all eight innings to get the win. Burns recorded six strikeouts, allowed only three hits, and did not issue any free passes over the course of the contest advancing her record to 16-3 on the season. Samantha Brooks took the loss and falls to 8-14 surrendering five hits and the one run which was unearned.
Christina Jaques led the Blazers offense going two for four on the plate with one run batted in followed by
Heather Pace who had two hits. Jaques had three more stolen bases trailed by Webb and
Lizzy Hess who each also swiped a bag in game one for Belhaven. Spring Hill was led offensively by Monica Zeringue with two hits and Lindsey Taylor added in a hit for the Lady Badgers in the day's first game.
Game Two
Unfortunately, Belhaven was on the losing end of a 1-0 decision in game two. The Lady Badgers got the only run of the game in the bottom of the third off of two hits. Brooks led the inning off for the Lady Badgers with a double to deep right center. Taylor bunted and reached on a base hit advancing Brooks to third. Zeringue was hit by a pitch from Belhaven's
Rebecca Rousseau allowing Taylor to take second. Brooke Turlich reached first on a fielder's choice plating Brooks to give Spring Hill the 1-0 edge and the Badgers made the lead stand up the rest of the way.
Rousseau took the loss pitching all six innings allowing the only run of the second game on two hits with four strikeouts and is now 10-2 in 2010. Brooks got the win for the Lady Badgers by firing all seven innings of game two giving up only two hits with two strikeouts.
Jaques and
Rachel Wright led the Belhaven offense with one hit apiece. Jaques also swiped a bag in game two giving her a total of four stolen bases in the doubleheader. Judy Barber had one RBI followed by Brooks and Taylor who each had a hit for Spring Hill.
Belhaven returns to action Wednesday as they travel to Chicago, Illinois for a non-conference doubleheader with 23rd ranked St. Xavier University. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:00 PM.
