Jackson, MS-The Belhaven softball team swept 24th ranked University of Mobile on Tuesday winning both games of a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader over the Rams 1-0 in game one and 4-2 in game two. The Blazers, who are ranked 9th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll improve to 33-3 overall and 8-0 in the GCAC. Mobile falls to 25-12 overall and 6-2 in the league after Tuesday's action.
Game One
Belhaven jumped on the board early in game one scoring once in the bottom of the first.
Britney Webb led off for the Blazers and lined out to right field while
Jessica Eggold grounded out to the shortstop.
Christina Jaques got the first hit for the Blazers in game one with a double to left field.
Tiffany Ansley hit a single to center field that drove in the first and only run of the game to spring Belhaven to a 1-0 victory. Ansley led the Belhaven offense in game one going 1 for 3 at the plate with one run batted in.
The Blazers looked great defensively and did not commit any errors keeping Mobile from crossing the plate in game one. Junior pitcher
Sarah Burns looked very impressive and led the Blazers defense as she went on to shutout the Rams in seven innings allowing only two hits while striking out six. The win by Burns advanced her overall record in the circle to 15-2 in 2010. Kamaron Strickland took the loss for Mobile allowing one run on five hits.
Game Two
Runs were much harder to come by for Belhaven in game two as the Rams refused to allow the Blazers to cross the plate until the bottom of the sixth inning. Mobile jumped on the board in the first inning as Kirstyn Joiner drove an RBI single to left center and also scored in the top of the fourth as Dorlicia Martin reached home plate on a fielding error by Ansley which gave the Rams a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Blazers finally regrouped and put together four runs with six hits straight to take the lead away from Mobile. The turning point for Belhaven began with a double by Webb to left center field, Eggold hit a single through the left side, and Jaques singled on a bunt. Webb and Eggold eventually came into score on a base hit by Ansley followed by Jaques who crossed the plate on a single by
Rian O'Bannon. Ansley got the last run for the Blazers as
Katie Sanders drove her in on a fielder's choice giving Belhaven a 4-2 lead.
Ansley led the offense again with one hit and two more RBI's plus she scored one run in the game followed by O'Bannon and Sanders who added an RBI respectively. Joiner had one RBI for the Rams to lead Mobile's offense in game two.
Rebecca Rousseau ended up pitching sixth innings and earned the win surrendering both of Mobiles runs on seven hits and seven strikeouts to go to 9-1 on the season. Burns came into pitch the seventh inning and got her first save of the season with one strikeout.
Victoria Buie suffered the loss and falls to 5-4 as she gave up three runs on nine hits, with one walk, and one strikeout.
Belhaven will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they host the Eagles of Judson College at Freedom Ridge Park starting at 2:00 PM in game one of a non-conference doubleheader.
