Blazers Upend William Carey

Ridgeland, MS-The Belhaven softball team, ranked 9th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll added two more wins on Friday afternoon at Freedom Ridge Park by upending 14th ranked William Carey University in a conference doubleheader 5-1 in game one and 4-3 in game two. The Blazers are now are now 29-3 overall and remain undefeated at 6-0 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.

Game One
Belhaven dominated the first inning defensively and offensively. Sarah Burns started off the top of the first inning with two strikeouts and the Blazers closed out the top of the inning when Casey Alexander flied out to centerfield. Britney Webb led Belhaven offensively in the bottom of the first inning as she was walked and stole second base. Tiffany Ansley flied out to right field cashing in Webb from third followed by Heather Pace's a single to left center that sent home Jessica Eggold giving Belhaven a 2-0 lead.

The Crusaders answered back in the top of the second with one run off of one hit. This would be the only run that the Blazers would allow in the entire first game. In the bottom of the fifth, Belhaven added two more runs as Eggold doubled down the right field line followed by Jacques' homerun to right center advancing Eggold to home plate making the score 4-1 Belhaven. The final run the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning when the bases were loaded and Eggold was hit by a pitch allowing Kayla Maldonado to score contributing to Belhaven's 5-1 victory.

Jaques had a strong performance in game one going 1 for 3 at the plate with a homerun and two runs batted in. Sanders added two hits followed by Eggold and H. Pace with one hit and one run batted in apiece. Sarah Burns pitched the entire game with eight strikeouts and allowed only two hits. Burns was credited with her 13th win of the 2010 season. Alyssa Boutwell pitched four innings and was charged with two runs on four hits suffering the loss for William Carey.

Game Two
Like game one, Belhaven jumped out on top early in the bottom of the first as Webb singled and stole second. H. Pace stepped up to the plate and singled to left center allowing Webb to score. William Carey (23-8, 4-2 GCAC) scored in the top of the second with one run off of two hits tying the score at 1-1.

The Blazers offense picked up in the bottom of the fourth as Rian O'Bannon was walked followed by Rachel Wright hitting a big homerun to give Belhaven the lead. The Crusaders made a comeback in the top of the fifth as they earned two runs off of three hits to tie the game up again at 3-3. However, William Carey's defense could not contain the Blazers for long as the Belhaven took a 4-3 lead over the Crusaders. Webb singled on a bunt and stole second base giving her a total of 52 stolen bases in the 2010 season. Jaques flied out to center field plating Webb for the winning run.

Rebecca Rousseau pitched the first four innings of the game two with five strikeouts allowing two runs on five hits. Burns picked up her second win of the day pitching the last three innings with four strikeouts surrendering one run on three hits. Burns earned her 14th win of the season and is now 14-2 in 2010. Anna Ard pitched the entire game and was tagged with four runs on five hits suffering the loss for William Carey in game two.

Rachel Wright had a great game for the Blazers as she went one for three at the plate with two runs batted in. Webb went two for three at the plate followed by Jaques and H. Pace who both had a hit and one run batted in.

Belhaven will take the field again on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Marion, Alabama to face Judson College in a non-conference doubleheader. The first pitch of game one is slated for 1:00 PM.
