Gulf Shores, AL-The Belhaven softball team posted two wins on day two of the Gulf Coast Invitational Saturday afternoon in Orange Beach Alabama. The Blazers opened the day with an 8-3 win over Thomas University before falling to 10th ranked St. Gregory's University 1-0 in game two. Belhaven played hard against a St. Gregory's team that was the 2009 NAIA National Tournament runner up. The Blazers then rebounded with an 8-1 victory against Trevecca Nazarene University in their final game of the day running their overall record to 20-3. Belhaven now has 108 stolen bases as a team this season setting a new school single season record for steals in a year.
Belhaven vs. Thomas
The Blazers were the visitors on the scoreboard in game one of the day against Thomas University and didn't waste any time putting runs on the board. Belhaven scored three runs in the first, one in the second, two in the third, and two in the fourth to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Thomas fought back for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Belhaven shutdown the Thomas offense the rest of the way to earn the win.
Tiffany Ansley had a big game at the plate for the Blazers by slamming her sixth home run of the season which helped lead to her game high 4 RBI's.
Christina Jaques went 3 for 3 at the dish with a run batted in while
Britney Webb and
Rian O'Bannon each tallied an RBI in the contest.
Salina Cervantes earned her second win in the circle for the Blazers pitching the first four innings allowing three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
Megan Timbs picked up the save as a result of pitching the final three innings of the game.
Belhaven vs. St. Gregory's
In the day's second game defense and pitching was the name of the game for both Belhaven and St. Gregory's. The contest was forced into extra innings as neither side could post a run through the first seven frames. Under international tie breaker rules, each team gets to place a runner at second to begin each extra inning. Unfortunately, St. Gregory's was able to plate that runner and pull out the win in the eighth. Jessica Reed's sacrifice fly proved to be the difference in the game as St. Gregory's posted a 1-0 win over the Blazers.
Sarah Burns took the loss pitching all eight innings with the one unearned run allowed. Burns held St. Gregory's to just four hits while striking out eight. The Blazers ended up with just five hits in the game as Webb,
Heather Pace, Jaques, O'Bannon, and
Lizzy Hess each collected one apiece.
Belhaven vs. Trevecca Nazarene
The Belhaven bats came back to life in the final game of the day against Trevecca Nazarene University. Much like the first game against Thomas, the Blazers pulled out in front early with three runs in the top of the first inning, tacked on two more in the fifth and added three more insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
O'Bannon had a huge game going 3 for 4 at the plate with five runs batted in for the Blazers. Ansley had three hits in four at bats with an RBI followed by
Rachel Wright who tallied two runs batted in on one hit. Burns pitched six innings and gave up just six hits and did not allow a run. Burns finished the game with nine strikeouts and got the victory running her record to 10-2 on the season.
Belhaven will be back in action on Friday when they participate in the William Carey University Invitational beginning at 10:00 AM with a contest against Grace College. The Blazers will then play Southern Nazarene University at 2:30 PM and finish the day by taking on Grace College again at 5:00 PM.
