Blazers Upset by Spring Hill

Mobile, AL-The Belhaven men's basketball had their two game winning streak snapped at Spring Hill College on Thursday night as the Badgers upset the 23rd ranked Blazers 76-71 in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action. The Blazers lost an opportunity to gain ground in the GCAC standings as first place LSU-Shreveport and second place William Carey both lost as well. Belhaven now finds themselves tied for third in the league with Tougaloo and one game ahead of Mobile.

Belhaven (20-7, 10-5 GCAC) opened up the scoring on Thursday night on a triple by Krayleon Winston 29 seconds into the contest. Spring Hill (12-12, 6-9 GCAC) then countered with nine straight points to jump ahead 9-3 with 16:18 left on the first half clock. The Blazers fought back to retake the advantage 17-15 following a pair of free throws by Larell Bailey at the 11:38 mark of the opening period.

Leading 25-24 with 4:53 to go before halftime, Belhaven watched as the Badgers would take the lead for good on a field goal by Patrick Grant sending Spring Hill back on top at 26-25. The Badgers closed out the opening period strong and eventually built a 38-29 lead when the buzzer sounded. Spring Hill continued to dominate Belhaven on both ends of the floor through the first 13 minutes of the second half and enjoyed their largest lead of the night at 61-45 with 7:43 to play.

Belhaven then made one final push to get back in the game using a 14-2 run to close the deficit to four points at 63-59 with just over five minutes remaining. The Blazers got as close as three points three different times in the last 2:29 of the game, but couldn't push themselves over the top. Spring Hill's Tyler Schwab and Marcus Coleman both made some key free throws to hold off Belhaven in the final minute of the game as the Badgers went on to claim the 76-71 win.

Belhaven had five players score in double figures led by Bobby Grier, Woodie Howard, Krayleon Winston, and Nathaniel Roche' who each had 12 points. Bailey finished the night with 11 points. Howard pulled down a team high six rebounds while Winston and Roche' grabbed five boards apiece. Roche' also rejected three Spring Hill shot attempts.

As a team, Belhaven made 41.4 percent of their field goals, 22.2 percent of their three point shots, and converted 73.1 percent of their free throw opportunities. The rebound battle was a draw as the Blazers and Badgers each tallied 36 total rebounds on the night. Belhaven's defense forced 16 Spring Hill turnovers and gave it away 15 times.

Patrick Grant had a big night for Spring Hill by posting a game high 20 points. Marcus Coleman added 18 points and Owen McNally fired in 14 points in the Badgers victory. McNally also led all players with eight rebounds. Spring Hill blocked seven Blazer shots as Nick Brown led the charge with three of them. The Badgers hit 43.5 percent of their shots from the floor, 34.6 percent of their three pointers, and 81.3 percent attempts at the charity stripe.

Belhaven will try and get back on track Saturday when they travel to Loyola University for another GCAC matchup. The Blazers knocked off the Wolfpack 77-60 in the first meeting of the season on January 21st. Saturday's tipoff is slated for 5:00 PM.
