Late Rally by Blazers Comes up Short at Emmanuel

Franklin Springs, GA-The Belhaven men's basketball team dropped their second straight game on Saturday afternoon falling at Emmanuel College 69-68 in a Southern States Athletic Conference cross division contest. The Blazers made a valiant effort to get back in the game trimming what was an 11 point deficit at 59-48 with 7:13 to play down to a two point game at 67-65 with seven seconds on the clock. However a pair of Lion free throws with seven seconds left sealed the victory.

Belhaven (3-3) was led by Daryl Arnold who had another big game with 20 points on 8 of 13 shooting from the field boosting his season average to 13.5 points per game. Arnold also had six rebounds and a blocked shot in Saturday's contest. Britton Smith followed Arnold with 17 points and then Nathaniel Roch'e chipped in 14 points while pulling down a game high 13 rebounds for his third double double this season. He is averaging 15.3 points and an even 10 rebounds per game this year. Roch'e was also busy rejecting shot attempts as he added six more blocks and now has 15 in six games played. Rob Wallace was the fourth Blazer to land in double figures in points with 11 in Saturday's contest.

Belhaven hit 43.1 percent of their field goals (28-65), made good on 38.5 percent of their triples (5-13), and 53.8 percent of their free throws (7-13). The Blazers have struggled at the free throw line so far this year shooting 58.7 percent as a team. On the boards, Belhaven was outrebounded 39-36, but took better care of the basketball with only 13 turnovers. Belhaven had nine blocked shots with six by Roch'e and seven steals.

Emmanuel (8-0) had two players in double figures led by Svetomir Fields with 11 points off the bench. Chase Procuro added 10 points and both Graham Maxwell and Michael Stanley had nine points. Tedrick Hudson poured in eight points and a team high seven rebounds in what was a very balanced game on both ends of the floor for the Lions. Stanley led the team in assists with four and Fields and Maxwell each had a blocked shot.

Emmanuel was 27 of 62 from the field for a shooting percentage of 43.5 percent, made 35.7 percent of their three point baskets (5-14) and converted 83.3 percent (10-12) of their shots at the foul line including 7 of 8 in the second half. The Lions turned it over 14 times and had 11 assists as a team.

Belhaven held an 18-13 lead midway through the first half following a 9-0 run that put them on top for just the second time in the game. The Blazers maintained a five point edge at 20-15 with 8:06 to play until the break, but then Emmanuel took the lead for good on a jumper by Charles Johnson which made it 21-20 with just over six minutes on the first half clock. The Lions outscored Belhaven 20-12 over the final eight minutes to grab a 37-32 halftime advantage.

Emmanuel expanded their lead throughout the opening minutes and pushed the Blazer deficit to 11 points for the first time in the game at 54-43 on a basket by Svetomir with 10:30 to go in the contest. Belhaven eventually chipped it down to two points twice in the final minute at 65-63 with 17 seconds left and then 67-65 with only eight seconds to go. However, Hudson held back the Blazers going 4 for 4 at the free throw line to win the game. Daryl Arnold hit a three pointer as time expired for Belhaven, but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback bid.

Belhaven will have some time off for the Thanksgiving holiday and will be back in action on the road at Pensacola Christian College November 30th starting at 5:30 PM.
