Blazers Bested by Tougaloo Saturday Night

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's basketball team saw a familiar face on Saturday night as cross town rival Tougaloo College took a 74-58 win on day two of the Coaches versus Cancer Classic in Rugg Arena. The Blazers struggled to find their offense and the Bulldogs played tough on both ends of the floor to get the win.
 
Belhaven (2-1) had only one player reach double figures on Saturday after seeing three players score 20 points or more against Dillard on Friday night. Detrick Johnson led the way with 10 points and also had a team high six rebounds in the contest. Britton Smith finished the night with eight points while David Arnold and Bernard Malone added seven points each. Stephen Collins had four assists and pair of steals to go along with three points.
 
As a team, Belhaven hit just 37 percent of their field goals and made only 29.6 percent of their shots in the first half enabling Tougaloo to build what would be an insurmountable lead. The Blazers connected on 26.3 percent of their attempts from behind the arc and made good on 54.2 percent of their free throw shots. Both teams had 39 rebounds in the game while Tougaloo forced 17 Belhaven turnovers and committed 12 turnovers of their own. The Bulldogs owned the lane scoring 44 of their 74 points in the paint Saturday night.
 
Tougaloo (4-1) had three players reach double figures on Saturday led by Juan Gray with a game high 17 points. Mario Luckett ended the game with 16 points and six rebounds and Marquise Mems tallied 15 points. Horace Whitehead had eight points and four assists and Luckett joined Whitehead with four assists as well. James Carter scored only four points, but made his presence felt on the boards with a game high 10 rebounds. As a team, the Bulldogs knocked down 46.2 percent of their field goals, 26.7 percent of their triples, and made half of their free throws.
 
Belhaven's largest lead of the game was 5-2 with 16:31 to go in the first half following a layup by Britton Smith. Tougaloo ended up building a 17 point lead at halftime at 40-23 and led by as many as 31 points with 13:17 to go in the game. Belhaven chipped away at the deficit and closed the gap to 14 points on a three pointer by Malone, but with only 47 seconds left in the second half their just wasn't enough time to make up the difference as Tougaloo went on for the 74-58 win.
