New Orleans, LA-The Belhaven volleyball team continued to struggle in Southern States Athletic Conference play Tuesday night losing at Loyola University in three sets. Final set scores in the match were 17-25, 22-25, and 15-25. Belhaven is now 8-10 overall and 0-4 in the SSAC West Division.
Belhaven got off to a slow start in the first set falling behind 23-10 before making a late rally to try and salvage the set. The Blazers took seven of eight points in the latter half, but Loyola finally put the set away on a kill by Sabrina Stansbury. Belhaven played much better in the second set and went toe to toe with the Wolfpack, but once again came up short. In set three, Loyola (19-11) came out strong and dominated Belhaven en route to the victory.
Leigh Anne Huddleston led Belhaven with seven kills and also contributed four digs and two block assists on the defensive side of the net.
Taylor Williams notched six kills with one ace, five digs and a block assist.
Gabriella Zorzoli anchored the Belhaven defense with eight digs and had 21 serve receptions.
Erinn Hampton tallied seven digs and had two block assists.
Erin Bradley assisted on 21 kills in the match.
Gina Gill had a big night for Loyola with a match high 16 kills in 35 attack attempts. Gill also contributed eight digs and a pair of block assists. Ashley England had 10 kills and Kathryn Johnson posted nine digs for the Wolfpack. Samantha Worsham ended the night with 38 assists and had a match high four aces.
Belhaven will try and rebound on Saturday when they take on Xavier University (LA) at 3:00 PM on Saturday followed by a 7:00 PM contest against cross town rival Millsaps College in the Belhaven Tri-Math.
