Blazers Fly Past SUNO

New Orleans, LA-The Belhaven men's basketball team kept the momentum going on Saturday night with a convincing 89-68 victory at Southern University at New Orleans in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action. The 20th ranked Blazers pulled away in the second half after the Knights were able to hang with Belhaven in the opening period. The Blazers dominated the paint with 50 points and the bench came up big again accounting for 40 points on the night.

Belhaven (16-2, 6-0 GCAC) fell behind 8-4 in first three minutes of the contest as SUNO came out strong on the offensive end of the floor. Rob Wallace had the first two Blazer field goals on back to back layups with the second coming at the 18:48 mark of the first half. Belhaven jumped on top for the first time at 9-8 following a free throw by Woodie Howard that capped a mini 5-0 run by the Blazers with 14:20 left in the opening period.

Over the next six minutes, the teams traded baskets and Belhaven eventually found themselves trailing by a point at 16-15 with just under eight minutes until halftime. The Blazers then exploded on a 17-2 run and opening up a 14 point advantage in a matter of four minutes to establish a solid foothold in the game. Larell Bailey knocked down a couple of key three pointers in the run including a triple that capped the scoring spurt giving the Blazers a 32-18 cushion. However, the Knights fought back to get within six points at 34-28 on a layup by Ronald Palmer right before the end of the first half.

It didn't take long for Belhaven to get going in the second half and put the game away. The Blazers opened the final period with a 16-3 run and grabbed their biggest lead of the night at that point 50-31 with 16:42 remaining in the contest. Belhaven continued to dominate and eventually extended the lead to 28 points at 73-45 with 9:05 showing on the second half clock. The Blazers got some big shots from Krayleon Winston, Tensley Cowan, and Nathaniel Roche' during the scoring stretch. SUNO (5-9, 0-6 GCAC) eventually got back to within 16 points at 80-64 late in the game, but it was too little to late as the Blazers ran out the clock and rolled to the 89-68 win.

Belhaven got a strong performance from Larell Bailey who led all scorers with 16 points on a 6 of 8 shooting night from the field. Roche' wasn't far behind with 15 points and Wallace had 14 points to round out the Blazers double digit scorers. Howard had a team high seven rebounds and along with A.J. Taylor and Josh Luckett picked up three assists. Luckett and Roche' each posted a pair of blocks on the defensive end of the floor.

As a team, Belhaven had one of their best games of the season shooting the basketball thanks to a 56.5 percent field goal percentage on Saturday. The Blazers made 33.3 percent of their three pointers and 56 percent of their attempts at the charity stripe. Belhaven's defense forced 23 Knight turnovers, but for one of the rare times this season were outrebounded by an opponent 43-34.

SUNO had three players land in double figures led by Xavier Francis with 14 points followed by Lionel Green with 13 points, and Ronald Palmer notched 11 points. Green ended the game as SUNO's leading rebounder with a game high nine boards against Belhaven. As a team, the Knight's made good on 39.4 percent of their field goals, were held to 22.2 percent from behind the arc, and converted 57.1 percent of their free throws.

Belhaven will be back in action on Monday night when they host Spring Hill College in another GCAC matchup. The tipoff in Rugg Arena is slated for 7:30 PM.
