New Orleans, LA-After finding themselves down two games to none at Loyola University on Tuesday, the Belhaven volleyball team rallied to win games three and four but could not overcome the Lady Wolfpack in game five as Loyola went on to win the match three games to two. The final scores were 18-25, 16-25, 25-23, 25-22, and 12-15 in Belhaven's Gulf Coast Athletic Conference opener.
Loyola (7-4, 3-0) dominated the first two games of the match as the Lady Blazers struggled to get things going early on. The Lady Wolfpack finished the second game strong using a 10-3 to take the two games to none lead. In game three, the Lady Blazers were down 13-10, but rallied to win the set and keep the match alive. Belhaven (8-9, 0-1) used a 7-3 run down the stretch to secure a two point game three win.
The Lady Blazers played spoiler again in game four after it looked like Loyola would close out the contest. Belhaven found themselves behind 22-20, but rallied for five straight points to take the game 25-22 and force a fifth and deciding set. Unfortunately, Loyola proved to be too much in game five edging out the Lady Blazers 15-12.
Belhaven had some outstanding individual performances on Tuesday night at Loyola. The Lady Blazers were led on offense by
Christina Jaques who had 21 kills. Defensively, Erin Hampton and
Jessica Davis arguably had their best matches of the season to date with 21 digs and 19 digs respectively. Jaques led the team with three blocks while Hampton added one solo block.
Erin Bradley had 22 assists and a pair of aces against the Lady Wolfpack.
Belhaven will return to the court on Tuesday when they host Southern University of New Orleans in another GCAC contest. The match is scheduled to get underway at 7:00 PM in Rugg Arena.
