Box Score vs Mary Hardin-Baylor Box Score vs Texas Wesleyan
Forth Worth, TX-On the second day of the Wesleyan Hughes Volleyball Classic hosted by Texas Wesleyan University, the Belhaven College volleyball team split a pair of hard-hitting matches. The Lady Blazers won the first match of the day to Mary Hardin-Baylor 3-2 with final scores of 25-20, 25-12, 25-27, 22-25, and 15-13. Belhaven lost their second match to Texas Wesleyan 3-0 with final scores of 19-25, 22-25, and 17-25.
The Lady Blazers topped Mary Hardin-Baylor in the first match. In game one, Belhaven dominated the Lady Crusaders and took an early lead 10-3 and kept it all the way through the game to claim the victory 25-20. Game two was much like game one. Belhaven took an early l5-9 lead with a kill by
Taylor Williams assisted by
Erin Bradley. After that, the Lady Blazers used a 10-3 run to defeat the Lady Crusaders in game two 25-12.
In game three, the Lady Crusaders took an early 8-4 lead. However, Belhaven gained momentum and answered back to make the score 25-24 toward the end of the game. The Lady Blazers could not hold on to the lead as Mary Hardin-Baylor won game three 27-25. In game four, Belhaven maintained the lead with a score of 19-18. Eventually, the Lady Blazers fell behind and the Lady Crusaders captured game four with a 25-22 victory.
In the final game of the first match, the Lady Crusaders took an early 2-0 lead with a kill by Mary Hardin-Baylor's freshman Christina Miller and an attack error by Belhaven's
Taylor Williams. Midway through the game, the Lady Blazers picked up momentum and stole the lead from Mary Hardin-Baylor with a score of 11-8. The Lady Crusaders were not strong enough to stop Belhaven's drive and the Lady Blazers took the victory in game five 15-13.
Jaques paced the Lady Blazers with 22 kills followed by
Christina Atwood with 18. Bradley led the team with 57 assists.
Taylor Williams had two aces followed by Bradley, Atwood, Davis, O'Malley, and Jaques with one each. Jaques led the Lady Blazers with 17 digs along with Bradley who added 14 digs.
In match two against Texas Wesleyan, Belhaven went back and forth with the Lady Rams and fell behind in the ladder part of the match. With game one tied (10-10), Texas Wesleyan accumulated a 14-4 run and opened up a 10 point lead at 24-14. Belhaven fought hard to get to 19-24, but it wasn't enough losing the opening game 19-25.
In game two, the Lady Blazers held a two point lead at 14-12 about halfway through the game and the Lady Rams united with a 20-14 run to stop Belhaven's drive and ultimately clinched game two with a 25-22 victory. In game three, Texas Wesleyan took an early 3-0 lead but the Lady Blazers gained composure and tied the game up 14-14. In the final half of the game, Belhaven could not hold on as the Lady Rams seized victory in game three 25-17.
Belhaven College was led by
Christina Jaques and Sam O'Malley with six kills each. Jacques also contributed two aces, and one solo block. O'Malley led with two block assists and
Jessica Akiona led the team with nine digs followed by
Taylor Williams and O'Malley with eight each. Bradley paced the Lady Blazers with 17 assists.
The Lady Blazers are now 8-8 and set to do battle Tuesday night with an away match in New Orleans, LA against Loyola University in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action. The match is slated for 7.
