Lady Blazers Open Season with a Pair of Victories

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven volleyball team opened the 2009 season with a pair of wins over Talladega College and Rust College in the Belhaven College Tri-Match Saturday afternoon in Rugg Arena. The Lady Blazers opened the day with a 25-16, 25-14, and 25-8 victory over Talladega and in their second game of the afternoon upended Rust in three games 25-20, 25-7, and 25-9.

Belhaven (2-0) jumped ahead early in all three games against the Lady Tornadoes of Talladega College (1-1) and never trailed in the final two games to pull out a solid win in the opening match of the day. Kourtney Clark led the Lady Blazers with 10 kills while freshman setter Erin Bradley turned in 27 assists in her first collegiate contest. Jessica Akiona paced the team with nine digs with Taylor Williams and Christina Jaques each adding six digs a piece against Talladega.
 
In match two of the afternoon against Rust College (0-2), the Lady Bearcats grabbed an lead early in game one and held a two point lead of 8-6 over Belhaven. The Lady Blazers then took the lead with five consecutive points to build a three point edge at 11-8. However, Rust College battled back to recapture a 17-16 advantage and had the momentum on their side. The Lady Blazers then regrouped and finally pulled away from Rust with a 9-3 run to close out the game. Belhaven went on to dominate the final two games and secure their second match win of the day.
 
Clark had another solid match for the Lady Blazers with a team high eight kills while Jaques added seven kills followed by Williams with six. Christina Atwood served up five aces and Bradley recorded 21 assists and led the team with 10 digs.
 
Belhaven will return to action on Friday in the Millsaps College invitational beginning at 5:00 PM against Union University. The Lady Blazers will then take on Millsaps at 7:00 PM followed by two matches on Saturday with Rhodes College and Piedmont College.
