Jackson, MS-The Belhaven softball team wrapped up a six game week by splitting a doubleheader with NCAA Division I Alcorn State University on Thursday afternoon at Freedom Ridge Park. The Lady Blazers won game one 1-0 and but fell in game two to the Lady Braves 4-3. Belhaven is now 32-14 overall and Alcorn State goes to 15-18 on the season after Thursday's games.
Game One
Game one proved to be a low scoring contest which has been rare for the Lady Blazers this season who had scored a team record 332 runs heading into play today. The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the third inning after the first two batters were out.
Kayla Maldonado grounded out and
Britney Webb popped out to short in what was turning into another quick inning.
Jessica Eggold then stepped to the dish and hit a ground ball back to the pitcher Elise Powell who threw wildly to first base allowing Eggold to get to second. It proved to be a costly error for Alcorn State as
Heather Pace made them pay with an RBI single to right field driving in Eggold to give the Lady Blazers a 1-0 advantage.
Salina Cervantes kept the Lady Brave offense off balance the entire game and pitched all seven innings to get the win. Cervantes recorded two strikeouts, allowed only four hits and did not issue any free passes over the course of the contest. Powell took the loss surrendering six hits and the one run which was unearned.
Game Two
The Lady Blazers got out the gate early in game two with a pair of runs in the first inning to jump ahead 2-0. Webb led the inning off with an infield single, stole second and went to third on a ground ball off the bat of Eggold.
Heather Pace chased home Webb with a double to left center and came in on a base hit by
Tiffany Ansley.
Alcorn State came back to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning with just one hit. Napua Gouveia drew a walk from pitcher
Ashley Mottola with one out and crossed the plate on a two run home run by Brittanee Crayton.
In the fifth, Belhaven loaded the bases to begin the inning on a walk to
Heather Pace, a single by Meadows to left and a base hit by Ansley up the middle. Cervantes, who came in to pitch in the top of the fifth, singled to left center as Pace scored to put the Lady Blazers up 3-2.
The Lady Braves then brought in Jennie Hatch to pitch relieving Michelle Lewis who had started the game for Alcorn State. Hatch got
Chelsea Randle to strikeout and two fielder's choice plays which cut down two runners at the plate preventing a big inning by Belhaven.
Alcorn State seized the momentum and promptly took the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Gouveia reached on an error by Ansley and the very next batter Hanako Killburn blasted a two run homer to make it 4-3 in favor of the Lady Braves. The Lady Blazers had singles in the sixth and seventh innings but could not mount a comeback as Hatch closed out the game giving Alcorn State the 4-3 victory. Cervantes suffered the loss for Belhaven in game two to fall to 15-7 in 2009.
Ansley had three hits and an RBI to lead the Belhaven offense.
Heather Pace had two hits and an RBI followed by Cervantes who added a hit and a run batted in. Crayton and Kilburn each had two run home runs accounting for all of Alcorn State's offense.
Belhaven will take the next few days off for the Easter Holiday and will return to the field on Wednesday at home against Jackson State University beginning at 3 PM.
