Blazers Strand 13 in Loss to Lambuth

Box Score
Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team had some opportunities to put runs on the board, but couldn't manage to get the one big hit they needed in a 6-4 loss to Lambuth University at Smith Wills Stadium Tuesday night. The Blazers left 13 men on base as they see their record fall to 30-15 on the season. The Eagles improved to 28-10 with the victory.

Lambuth took the lead early with a run in the top of the first inning off Belhaven starting pitcher Joe Patterson. Ryan McPherson had an infield single and reached second on a throwing error by Shawn Diehl. McPherson later scored on an RBI groundout by Mike Davis. Belhaven failed to score in the bottom of the first but put together their first scoring threat in the bottom of the second. However, Belhaven loaded the bases but could not push any runs across the plate.

The Eagles took advantage in the top of the third by scraping together a pair of runs to build a 3-0 advantage. Lambuth got their runs on a sacrifice fly by Bryan Willsey and then Mike Davis drilled a double off the wall in right center to drive home the innings second run. The Blazers put their first run on the board in the third after two men were out. Timmy Foster singled to left and then pitcher Korey Bates balked sending Foster to second. Westcott then came through with a base hit to right field plating Foster to make it a 3-1 game.

Belhaven trimmed the deficit to one in bottom of the fifth on Lake Eiland's fourth home run of the season which cleared the left field wall. It could potentially have been a two run homer, but Chanse Cooper was called out on a bang bang play at first trying to leg out an infield single. In the top of the sixth, the Eagles extended their lead to 6-2 with three runs in the frame. The Eagles loaded the bases and a walk by Golden Grasse issued to Will Wakefield accounted for the first run. An infield single by Mitchell Thomson drove in the second run and a throwing error by Eiland on the play opened the door for the third run.

The Blazers rallied in the bottom of the sixth inning for two runs cutting the Lambuth lead back to two at 6-4. Eiland had a bases loaded two run double down the left field line plating courtesy runner Mark Gray and Diehl with just one out in the inning. The Blazers loaded the bases again, but unfortunately failed to score stranding three more runners in the inning. The Lambuth bullpen then shut down the Blazers the rest of the way as the Eagles went on for the 6-4 win.

Patterson suffered his first loss of the year to go to 4-1 as he was charged with five runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of work. Erin Keel got the win in relief working one inning allowing two runs on two hits. Eiland had a good night at the plate for the Blazers collecting four hits in five at bats and 3 RBI's. Westcott had the other RBI on the night with two hits in four official plate appearances. Davis had two RBI's for the Eagles while Wakefield and Thomson each added an RBI apiece.
