Orange Beach, AL-It was a rough afternoon for the Belhaven softball team in their opening game of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference tournament losing to the University of Mobile by a final of 10-0. The Loss drops the Lady Blazers record to 34-18 while the Lady Rams improve to 32-10 in 2009.
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, Mobile exploded for seven runs on nine hits in the bottom of the second inning to take control of the game. Desiree Truett, Britney Dowdle, Tess Ackerman, Taylor Phillips, and Holli McLeod all had RBI hits in the inning. The Lady Rams went on to tack on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game away. Ackerman added another RBI while Ally Scott picked up a pair of RBI's in the fourth frame.
Belhaven had chances to put runs on the board in the fourth and fifth innings but could not come up with a big hit to chase any runners home.
Salina Cervantes took the loss pitching the first two innings allowing seven runs on nine hits and falls to 16-10 on the year. Leslie Pickette worked all five innings in the run rule victory for Mobile and gave up five hits with three strikeouts.
Belhaven will return to action Saturday morning in the loser's bracket of the GCAC tournament against Spring Hill College who lost 5-0 to William Carey in Friday's other opening round contest. The first pitch is slated for 10 AM.
