Lady Blazers Secure Two Wins on Friday

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven softball team extended their winning streak to six in a row on Friday afternoon defeating Lambuth University 8-0 and William Woods University 21-2. William Woods is ranked 14th in latest NAIA top 25 Poll. With the wins, Belhaven improves to 23-10 overall and will look to keep things rolling with three more games on Saturday.
 
Game 1 vs. Lambuth
 
Belhaven was the visiting team on the scoreboard in the first game on Friday and in the top of the first inning scored three runs to take the early lead. Britney Webb started the inning off with a base hit, stole second, and then came home on a wild pitch. Mallory Meadows drove in the other two runs on her 11th home run of the season scoring Heather Pace to make it 3-0.
 
The Lady Blazers added two more runs in the top of the fifth on run scoring singles by Britney Webb and Heather Pace. At that point, Belhaven held a 5-0 advantage over the Lady Eagles. In the top of the seventh, the Lady Blazers iced the game away by putting three more runs on the board. Heather Pace blasted her third home run of the year over the left field fence chasing home Jessica Eggold who led the frame off with a base hit. The third run of the inning was scored by Meadows who reached on an error and came in on a single by Keresa Steichen.
 
Ashley Mottola pitched a complete game shutout for the Lady Blazers earning her ninth win in fourteen decisions. It was arguably her best outing of the year allowing only two hits while striking out five without surrendering a walk. Offensively, Heather Pace had two hits and 3 RBI's followed by Meadows who had 2 RBI's.
 
Game 2 vs. William Woods University
 
The Lady Blazers faced off against the #14 team in the country in the second game on Friday and totally dominated the Lady Owls 21-2. Belhaven scored 11 times on seven hits in the bottom of the first inning to set the tone. The Lady Blazers then scored six more runs in the bottom of the second collecting five more hits. One of those hits was a grand slam off the bat of Heather Pace and after two innings Belhaven led 17-0
 
The Lady Owls picked up single runs in the top of the third and fifth innings while the Lady Blazers scored two more times in the third and fourth. Heather Pace went a perfect 5 for 5 at the plate with 11 RBI's and four runs scored. Tiffany Ansley went 4 for 5 at the dish with 3 RBI's. Eggold and Chelsea Randle drove in two runs each while Webb and Maldonado drove in one run apiece.
 
Salina Cervantes goes to 10-4 on the season as she pitched all five innings allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Kelsey Schulte suffered the loss for William Woods. Belhaven takes the field again on Saturday with three more games beginning at 11 AM with Bethel College (TN).
