Mallory Meadows led an offensive onslaught Wednesday night as the Belhaven softball team swept Rust College 28-0 in game one and 24-0 in game two to improve to 3-1 in the 2009 season.
Meadows had 10 RBI's in game two which tied an NAIA record set by Lakyn Newton of Shorter College (Ga.) vs. Sewanee University of the South (Tenn.) on March 6
th, 2008. Meadows drove in a combined total of 18 RBI's in the two games with the Bearcats. Meadows also cranked two home runs in game one and two more in game two giving her a total of five round trippers on the season.
In game one, the Lady Blazer offense had total of 32 hits in 43 at bats and scored 15 runs in the first inning to get the day started. Belhaven tacked on 12 more runs in the bottom of the third and added one more in the fourth to close out the game in five innings. A number of Lady Blazers had outstanding offensive performances.
Britney Webb,
Heather Pace, and
Britanee Pace each had five hits. Meadows collected four hits along with
Tiffany Ansley followed by
Kayla Maldonado with three.
Meadows also picked up her first pitching victory of the season going three innings of no hit softball with seven strikeouts.
Ashley Mottola worked the final two innings striking out the side in both frames to secure the shutout.
In game two, Belhaven's offense continued to fire on all cylinders by putting three runs on the board in the first, 15 runs in the second, three more in the third followed by another three spot in the fourth. The Lady Blazers had 23 hits in 36 at bats and blasted three home runs, including two home runs from Meadows.
Meadows, Ansley, and
Salina Cervantes led the hit parade in game tow with four hits a piece followed by Webb and
Chelsea Randle with three hits each. Meadows drove in 10 of the 24 Lady Blazer runs and Cervantes added four RBI's with two coming on her first home run of the season. Cervantes also pitched the first four innings of the game to get her first win of the season. She did not allow any hits while striking out seven Bearcat batters. Mottola came in to pitch the final inning and recorded two more strikeouts. The Belhaven pitching staff did not surrender a hit the entire night.
The Lady Blazers return to action on Friday at 4 PM in their opening game of the Belhaven College Bash with Mid-Continent University at Freedom Ridge Park. Belhaven will also play at 6 PM on Friday followed by three games at 11 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM on Saturday.
