Jackson, TN-The Belhaven men's basketball team could not muster a repeat performance of their first meeting of the season against Union University (TN) Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs cruised to a 108-83 home victory over the Blazers. Belhaven edged out a win over Union on November 24th 75-72, but could not slow down the Bulldogs who shot 66.1 percent from the field.
Belhaven (8-1) scored the first basket of the game on a field goal by
Nathaniel Roche' just 14 seconds into the contest. The Blazers then owned leads of 4-2 and then 7-5 with 17:52 showing on the first half clock. However, with the scored tied at 7-7, Union's Greg Truvillion dialed up a three pointer putting the Bulldogs on top 10-7 with 17:13 remaining in the first half.
Unfortunately, Belhaven would not tie or take the lead for the remainder of the afternoon. Leading 21-19 at the 11:58 mark of the first half following a three point bucket by
Allen McClain which pulled the Blazers to within two points, the Bulldogs proceeded to outscore Belhaven 32-15 over the final 12 minutes of the half to take a commanding 56-34 advantage into the locker room. Union kept the pressure on in the second half and the Blazers were unable to climb back into the game.
Belhaven was led by
Rob Wallace who tossed in a team high 15 points.
Larell Bailey added 13 points while
Josh Luckett had a good game coming off the bench to tally 10 points.
Woodie Howard finished the game with a team high eight rebounds and
Bobby Grier notched four assists for Belhaven. As a team, the Blazers struggled from the field making only 36.9 percent of their shots against Union. Belhaven finished the night connecting on 28.6 percent of their three pointers and made good on 72.2 of their opportunities at the free throw line. Following Saturday's game Belhaven is hitting 48.3 percent of their total field goal attempts on the season.
Union (8-3) had a balanced offensive attack as the Bulldogs had six players score in double figures led by Stan McNeil with a game high 21 points. Greg Truvillion followed McNeil with 20 points and added 14 rebounds for the double double. Coming into Saturday's matchup with Belhaven, Truvillion ranked third in the NAIA in defensive rebounds per game and eighth in both total scoring and total rebounds per contest. Samuel Danache and Roland Banhoro each had 14 points while Keith Tolliver added 12 points followed by Alan North with 10 points to round out the double digit scorers.
As a team, Union made 66.1 percent of their field goals, 52 percent of their three pointers, and 63 percent of their free throws. The Bulldogs also held the rebounding edge 44-39 and turned it over 21 times. The Blazers coughed up the ball 14 times on Saturday afternoon.
Belhaven will be back in action on December 18th when they host the Coaches versus Cancer Classic in Rugg Arena. The Blazers will play Blue Mountain College on Friday the 18th at 8:00 PM and will then meet up with Trevecca Nazarene University the following night starting at 7:00 PM.
