Blazers Run Past Pensacola Christian College in Home Opener

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's basketball team had another solid performance turning in an impressive 86-64 win over Pensacola Christian College Saturday night in Rugg Arena. The Blazers had three players reach double figures in scoring and dished out 21 assists as a team in route to the victory.

Belhaven dominated the game from the 17 minute mark of the first half on. The Eagles got on the board first with a three point basket by Casey Christian 35 seconds into the game to lead 3-0. The Blazers then tied the game at 4-4 on a free throw by Rob Wallace and after Pensacola Christian regained the advantage at 6-4 with 14:29 left in the first half, Belhaven went on a 29-7 run over the next seven minutes to build a commanding 20 point lead at 33-13.

The Eagles closed the gap to eight points with just over three minutes to go in the opening period on a couple of free throws by Omi Alipo-on making the score 36-28. Belhaven rallied to extend the lead back to 17 points at the end of the first half thanks in part to a field goal by Isaiah Rice with four seconds to go before halftime. The buzzer sounded with the Blazers owning a 49-32 halftime lead.

The Eagles would get no closer the rest of the game as Belhaven established a 30 point advantage at the 11:39 mark of the second half. Krayleon Winston dropped in the field goal to give Belhaven a 72-42 lead. The Eagles cut their deficit back down to 17 points at 79-62 in the final three minutes of the contest on a pair of free throws by Alip-on. However, the Blazer defense did not allow Pensacola Christian to get any closer as the final second ticked off the clock. Terence Stringfellow capped the game off with the final bucket of the night with six seconds left to give the Blazers an 86-64 win.

Tensely Cowan led the Blazers with 18 points and had an impressive night shooting the basketball going 7 for 8 from the field. Woodie Howard chipped in with 14 points off the bench and Rob Wallace rounded out the double digit scores with 10 points. Detrick Johnson had a game high seven assists as he consistently found the open man on the floor. Johnson also had five rebounds and came away with four steals. Nathaniel Roche' paced Belhaven in the rebounding department with seven total boards on the night.

As a team, Belhaven made 52.4 percent of their shots from the field and converted 69.2 percent of their free throw opportunities. The Blazers only attempted 11 three point shots as Wallace and Allen McClain each dialed up one triple in Saturday's game. Belhaven was outrebounded by Pensacola Christian 38-33, but the Blazers were able to force 27 Eagle turnovers. Belhaven pressed the Eagles for the majority of the game and Pensacola Christian was unable to find any answers for the Blazers pressure defense. Likewise, Belhaven committed only 14 turnovers in the contest.

The Eagles had four players in double figures led by Alipo-on with 16 points followed by Rick Turner with 15, Brooks Lindblad had 11, and Ryan Scott had 10. Alipo-on also had a team high seven rebounds with five of those coming on the offensive side of the ball. Belhaven's defense held Pensacola Christian to 29.6 percent shooting from the floor while the Eagles hit just 21.1 percent of their three point opportunities.

Belhaven will return to the court on Tuesday night when the meet up with Wesley College in Rugg Arena beginning at 7:30 PM. The Blazers beat the Warriors in their season opener October 31st at Wesley 102-95.
