Blazers Roll to a 102-79 Win at Blue Mountain

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's basketball team eclipsed the 100 point mark for the second time in as many games with a 102-79 win at Blue Mountain College on Thursday night. The Blazers held a single digit lead for the majority of the first half and then outscored the Toppers by 14 points in the second half to pull away for the victory.

Both teams traded baskets over the first five minutes of the game, but the Blazers were finally able to establish a seven point lead with 14:18 remaining in the opening period on a field goal by Woodie Howard. The Toppers didn't back down though and eventually tied the game at 19-19 with 10:41 left on the first half clock. With the score tied at 20-20, Belhaven (2-0) put together an 8-0 run to jump back on top with 9:10 left in the first half. Blue Mountain (0-3) cut the Blazer lead down to two at 38-36, but the Blazers rallied to push their advantage to nine points just before halftime. Krayleon Winston hit the field goal with 19 seconds left in the half sending Belhaven to the locker room with a 47-38 halftime lead.

The Blazers hit just under 53 percent of their field goals in the first half and made eight free throws in13 trips to the charity. The Belhaven defense held the Toppers to a 40.5 percent shooting clip in the first half. Blue Mountain attempted 20 three point shots, but only made five of them against a strong Belhaven perimeter defense.

The Blazers put it all together in the second half and finally pulled away from Blue Mountain for good to lock down the 102-79 win. The Blazers had four players reach double figures in scoring led by Nathaniel Roche' with 23 points and a game high 15 rebounds. It was Roche's second consecutive double double to begin the season. Woodie Howard followed Roche' with 19 points while Rob Wallace added 16 points and Larell Bailey fired in 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Bobby Grier paced Belhaven in assists with four and Howard tallied a team high four steals.

As a team, Belhaven made 45.6 percent of their shots from the field and owned a huge advantage in the rebounding department at 65-56. The Blazer defense also forced 26 Blue Mountain turnovers while committing 18 turnovers of their own.

Blue Mountain was led by Brad Pressley with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Lakendrick McCullum had a good night as well with 20 points and 11 rebounds while Renell Collins contributed 10 points to round out the double digit scorers. The Toppers were limited to 32.2 percent on shots from the field and made only 19 percent of their 42 three point shots.

The Blazers will return to the court in their home opener on Saturday night against Pensacola Christian University beginning at 6:00 PM as part of Homecoming 2009 on the Belhaven campus.
