Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's basketball team defeated cross town rival Millsaps College on Tuesday night 84-69 to remain unbeaten at 5-0 in the 2009-10 season. After a bit of a slow start, the Blazers got rolling towards the end of the first half and put together a solid second half to pull out the win.
Millsaps (0-1) had the momentum early in the contest as they built a six point lead with just over four minutes gone by in the first half. Blake Martinez got the Major's going on offense with a layup off a Blazer turnover to begin the game. Belhaven (5-0) then countered with a 6-0 run to take the lead at the 18:15 mark of the first half.

Larell Bailey each dialed up three point shots to account for the six points.
Millsaps then proceeded to go on a 10-0 run to recapture the advantage at 12-6 and then eventually pushed the lead to seven points at 20-13 on a layup by Chris Ingle with 11:22 left in the opening half. Belhaven then turned things around outscoring the Majors over the next 3:18 to deadlock the score at 22 all with 8:04 on the first half clock. The Blazers then took the lead at 24-22 on a jumper by
Rob Wallace and all of a sudden at the four minute mark Belhaven had opened up an 11 point advantage at 37-26 on a three pointer by
Larell Bailey. The Majors then closed the gap to seven points at the end of the first half with Belhaven holding a 43-36 lead.
In the second half, the Blazers pushed their lead back to double digits at 51-40 with just under three minutes gone by on another triple by Bailey. Belhaven's largest advantage in game came with 10:41 to go as the Blazers used a 17-9 run to put some distances between themselves and the Majors. Following a
Detrick Johnson three point shot, the Blazers had a 68-49 lead.
Millsaps fought back to get within 10 points at 79-69 with just over two minutes to play in the contest, but could get no closer as the Blazer defense tightened up and kept the Majors off the board for the rest of the game. The final Belhaven basket of the night was dropped in by
Michael Rivers with four seconds on the clock and when the buzzer sounded the Blazers locked up the 84-69 win.
Belhaven had three players with 15 points or more in the game led by
Nathaniel Roche' with a game high 22 points.
Rob Wallace and
Larell Bailey finished the night with 15 points each while Bailey and Roche' led the Blazers on the boards with nine rebounds apiece. Roche', Bailey, and Wallace also pace the team in scoring so far this season with per game averages of 15.2, 12.4, and 12.6 points respectively.
As a team, Belhaven hit 46.2 percent of their field goals while knocking down 50 percent of their attempts from the floor in the second half. The Blazers fired in 31.3 percent of their shots from behind the arc and converted at a 68.4 percent clip at the free throw line. Belhaven had a 42-33 edge in rebounding and limited their turnovers to 14 on the night.
Millsaps was led by Cameron Varnado who had 22 points and five rebounds for the Majors. Blake Martinez finished the night with 14 points and five rebounds followed by Chris Ingle with 11 points and four rebounds. The Blazer defense held Millsaps to a 38 percent shooting clip from the field and limited the Majors to a 29 percent shooting night from behind the arc. Millsaps converted 72 percent of their free throw opportunities.
Belhaven is back in action on Saturday when they return home to face Blue Mountain College in Rugg Arena. The Blazers beat the Toppers 102-79 in their firts meeting of the season on November 5th at Blue Mountain. Saturday's tipoff is slated for 7:00 PM.
