Mobile, AL-The Belhaven volleyball team season came to an end with a rough loss on Saturday morning against the University of Mobile. The final set scores were 20-25, 12-25, and 10-25 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals.
On offense, the Blazers were led by
Taylor Williams with seven kills and
Christina Atwood with six kills followed by
Christina Jaques with four kills.
Erin Bradley paced Belhaven with 21 assists. Defensively, Jaques and
Kourtney Clark led with five digs and one blocking assist apiece. Atwood and Bradley chipped in with one solo block each.
In Saturday's contest, Belhaven had a total of 24 kills, 22 assist, 20 digs, two solo blocks, and two blocking assists.
After last years season of 9-26 overall and 1-7 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, the Blazers looked like a different team, doubled their wins from last year, and improved tremendously to end their 2009 season with an overall record of 18-20 and 5-5 in GCAC play. “Despite the disappointing ending, we were more of an offensive force this year, and made strides in rebuilding the foundation,” says Coach Lydia Smith, “We had just enough athletes to compete and did well with what we had.”
